Boxing

Big task due to the weight jump but that to me means he’s swerving a couple of LW beasts in bivol and Beterbiev. Little bit of cherry picking imo
Of course he is, but if it was you trying to win a World Title wouldn’t you go for the one you thought you had the best chance of winning? The step up in weight is a big challenge in itself.

I’m not knocking it . he’s not the first P4P no 1 to cherry pick . he’s been doing it for a few years. That’s boxing and it’ll never change in its current form. he’s fought GGG and kovalev when they were on the slide.

Sometimes it’s nice to see the best fight the ultimate test . Yes the jump to CW is a big ask but id rather see canelo face the toughest challenge rather than just attempt to grab another belt .

i Wish I preferred the ufc over boxing at times as they have it to a tee imo .

This is basically an attempt at grabbing another belt, he’s gone for the weakest champion in that weight class.

Could have went for Joe Smith at light heavy if he wanted a weak champion. The French lad at Cruiser has a worse record than Makubu. He hasn't beat anyone of note.
Smith is at LHW, beating him won’t gain him much unless he’s going to stick around there and clear up with Beterbiev and Bivol to become undisputed in another weight class, which would be way more impressive than moving up to fight a fella Bellew sparked in two rounds 5 years ago.

It’s a grab to say he’s a 5 weight world champion, good on him it’s still a challenge of some sort but it’s a cherry pick. Agree about the Frenchman, but who knows I’ve never seen him they might see something more in Makubu they can exploit. He hasn’t got the strongest record either, who’s he beat Kurdashov who’s got some power but one of the worst chins in boxing?

Kurdashov is fun to watch. Makabu has beat a lot of decent European level fighters. It will be a decent fight and he'll probably move back down to fight Bivol or Beterbiev.

Callum Johnson has got the Smith Jr fight, if he wins he might end up getting a Canelo fight at some point.

You’ve hit the mail on the head, “European level fighters”. That shows his level when he’s been a pro about 12 years and does not have a world class win.

Best outcome for Canelo would be to go up and beat Makubu and make an agreement in principle with Beterbiev/Bivol to fight each other, winner gets the payday with Canelo, only leaves him one fight away from being undisputed at LHW there.

He always fights in May on cinco de mayo, if Beterbiev etc get a move on they could have the self in prime position for that.
