Was caught out a couple of times. Especially with the ball in behind. A better side would have exposed him big time. A good young prospect; but not good enough...yet.
agree here, obviously though he needs experience playing on the big stage consistently etc etc before a full judgement can be made though

I thought he had a pretty good game to be honest, although I don't think left back is his best position. Given his level of inexperience at Prem level (only his 3rd appearance) he did well.

Better defender than Baines, not as good a passer or attacker than Baines.

Agree with the first part, but your 2nd part, the passing attacking Baines...Nah, that Baines is long gone, neutered and made less by lack of confidence, Injury, Pienaar's demise and not helped at all by Martinez's 'narrow' in both senses of the word, formation / philosophy.

Baines got 13 assists last season. The highest in his career, and amongst the highest ever for a defender.

Caught a long way out of position once yesterday, but other than that did rather well. It was against Watford, mind.

Let's see how he gets on in the next few games, them's the test.

Think it was a mistake having him at left back yesterday as it's clearly not his proper position. For me he didn't look comfortable receiving the ball on the wing and it meant we had very little threat from that side. That's not necessarily his fault because every player has his strengths and he shouldn't be expected to be a Leighton Baines or Seamus Coleman type full back who can get forward well if that isn't his game which it clearly isn't.

I wouldn't bother playing him there again and Oviedo should start there next game. Defensively he did fine, although caught out once or twice but no more than Stones, Jagielka or Coleman were.

I also think having attacking full backs is one of our biggest strengths so we need to utilise that better. Cleverley will be able to do a job on the left possibly with Oviedo at left back, but without a proper left sided midfielder and proper left back yesterday, we gave their right side no problems at all.

Martinez needs to see that after yesterday so we have a chance against Southampton. With Oviedo at left back the side will be a lot better balanced and I think we can get something from the game. If we play the same team as yesterday we will get nothing.

you use statistics like a drunk uses a lamp post, for support rather than Illumination...like it or not, the Baines of last season ( the team as a unit were poor as well ) was not the Baines of yore. Deny it as you may...the evidence of my own eyes shows me he wasn't

Solid at the back but things broke down when he was in advanced positions, and we're a team that likes to utilise full backs in attack.

But then he's not a full back so I don't attach too much blame to him.

Taking him off for another striker and sticking Barry at LB for better delivery was a good move. Granted I'd have rather seen Oviedo replace Galloway and Kone replace Barry.
