Young Brendan could have had a hat trick yesterday if it wasn't for the selfishness of other players, Martinez needs to get a grip on them, they're blocking his goal scoring progress.
1st Goal. Selfish Barkley nicked an open goal off him which would have allowed him his first goal for us. He'd obviously run about 50 yards to get into that position from left back, Ross had probably run 5 yds.Let's have some reward for effort here Roberto , tell Ross to get out the way next time and leave it to Bren.
2nd Goal. What is Rom up to ? Last season that header would have hit the left post and fallen nicely into Brendan's path as he was the nearest, giving him an easy tap in . Again he'd run 50 yds , all Rom had done was get up off the floor a yard away.

And don't get me started on what would have been his 3rd goal. A brilliant left foot half volley heading for the net when Mirallas shouts out "That's my ball , I'm having this goal" and jumps into the way of the ball thinking he can score himself.Pfft, shocking stuff.
I'm starting to think its a Hibbert inspired conspiracy " Don't let this young upstart score a goal from full back before me lads."

I know he's never going to score the"driving into the box, fantastic shot " goals we've seen from Baines and Coleman, but with a bit more composure the brilliant positions he picks up are going to lead to goals ...... someday.

I think once he slots a goal he will naturally have more confidence to attack more directly. This comes with confidence and experience of course to know where to be positionally.

I wonder where his best position will end up being, LB / LCB/ LCDM. He's got the lot...

Id love to see him next to Stones for Everton and England.

the amount of times he is on that far post when we score is unreal, he must have some engine on him

Almost completely convinced now that this lad is a defensive mid. Possibly an international class one.
He may not be that comfortable going forward but he is always looking to be positive and take responsibility.

I honestly think stones would make a top quality box to box midfielder ... Or an amazing dm

..this is the key point. The chances are coming to him in open play and he's in the penalty area. That not only reflects 'some engine' but a desire to get in there time after time. Similar to Coleman who also scores the majority of his goals in the box and from open play. Tremendous.

some sites suggested Baines would start the Villa game ... I think that would have been very unfair on Galloway who has been nothing short of a revelation this season. Players like Galloway are our (bright) future, to relegate them to the subs bench because a 'name' is available is wrong and not the kind of message we should be giving to our budding stars.

That Martinez chose to include Gibson and Osman on the bench then bring them on instead of giving some of the youngsters a run doesn't bode well. It's a testament to how well Galloway has played that a lot will be expected of Baines if he is to justify selection ahead of Galloway, certainly a lot more than he (Baines) has produced in the past couple of seasons.

The U21's had a tasty game against Porto on Sunday so more than likely why Gibson et al were given the minutes on the pitch as they're closer to the first team than the kids.

thanks for that ... been away so not bang up to date on the U21's .. {scurries off read U21 thread and reports ... crying shame that the club don't invest more time, effort and money in publicising & broadcasting the U21's especially given the crop of bright, young stars in the making).

TBH the quality of the youth is such that, unless we have horrendous injuries, I wouldn't buy anyone in January apart from a new keeper.

Jeez , we have the best young centre back in Europe and you want to experiment with where he plays. Madness , just like Hodgson playing him at right back for England.

You're right but I wouldn't have any qualms seeing Stones play DM if we had an injury crisis in that position or something. Fairly sure he'd boss it.

Edit: on topic, I love Brendan's attitude. It was hilarious when one of their players tried to kick off on him on Saturday, he just looked completely unimpressed and raised his eyebrows and did nothing else. And he was grinning his face off when Mirallas blocked his shot. Absolutely workhorse and a great head on his shoulders - can't have too many of those in a squad.
