Brendan Galloway

Looked very solid if unspectacular, but for a 19 year old centre half playing at left back that's no bad thing.

Him and Stones could be very good pairing for us for a good few years. The only issue is when do we start playing them together? Playing 2 young lads at centre have could be a recipe for disaster, no matter how good they are.

Jagielka is 33 tomorrow so will probably gradually integrate Galloway over the next 2 seasons.

Thats ideal succession planning.

Genuinely just remembered this and logged on to post it. Pretty great to watch because of the confidence as you say, but also shows great athleticism - look at him go:

....him doing this was noticeable for the U21s last season, he is rapid. Might be worth a £1 first goalscorer bet as he might just get himself on the end of something. His performances so far are low key but sound enough. Promising.

Very pleased to see how he is progressing. With him at fullback he doesn't half give us a bit of height (which is something we've lacked for 15 years). On Saturday we had Jagielka, Stones, Galloway, Barry, Barkley & Lukaku who were all over 6 ft.

I am not trying to pour scorn on the lad, but I do still see some mistake sin his game that were reminiscent of when Stones first came in. He can get caught ball watching and seems to take up positions that are more reminiscent of a centre half than a full back. He doesn't like letting people in on the inside of him and defends that central area very well. That's instinctively how you play as a centre half. You close the space in the middle and pass on responsibility for the flanks.

A couple of times though, he was giving the wide man far too much space. To play at fullback, you have to be far more willing to go and get tight to the wide man, and match him man for man. At times Tadic was a bit all over him in terms of the space he had available.

As has been said though, he is learning. His biggest asset is (as the commentators said) he's unflappable. That reminds me a lot of Stones who would get caught under the ball a bit. I think he will learn to correct the mistakes he is currently making and not let it get his confidence down.

If he can play 10+ games this season it will be invaluable for his development. At present though, if Oviedo is fit I would probably look to play Oviedo and use Galloway in the league cup. The experience he has got though, from playing a 45 minutes against Tadic will have done him the world of good.

As a final caveat I no I am being ultra-critical of him here. I am holding him to the standards of someone like Leighton Baines, who is one of the best in the world, in a position he's not familiar with. For a young player, he has done brilliantly well and will continue to improve.

I was surprised to not even see Oviedo make the bench on Saturday. If he's injured again it looks like Galloway might get those 10+ games you mention a lot sooner than we all probably thought.

Also @Eggs he's definitely worth a little flutter for FGS. Against Spurs at home he got into a couple of great positions which tells me he can sniff out a little opportunity when it presents himself.

Tadic was playing centraly first half and it was usualy mane he was up against!

is he never not ?

tbh I am not sure that either Galloway or Browning will be our long term answer at full back. If they can push one another to improve into centre backs and Garbutt pushes on at Fulham I would be feeling good about the defensive youth at Goodison.

Oviedo to me is a short term gap filler

I think sometimes its good to have centre backs that can play full back.
Galloway and browning are both quick enough to play there and as they are centre backs by trade can be more defensivly sound then our attacking full backs.
This is not me saying that they should be our fullbacks but when we do have to roll up our sleeves and stay tight then they are good options to come in at fullback

I probably agree. Lescott was ok wasn't he
