I think we should give Oviedo a chance. Roberto has talked about how he likes his players to be flexible and capable of playing in different positions or adapt to different formations so give Oviedo a chance and if it doesnt work then chance formations alittle bit maybe change to something like a 343 or 4141 like this.

---------- Jags-------Distin
-----------------Barry
Coleman---McCarthy-------Oviedo
---Mirallas----Barkley----Pienaar
----------------Lukaku

Barry would be playing in a similar position Heitinga has played, as a sweeper or libero or whatever. Same personel but different formation to help or aliviate any deficiency Oviedo could have defending.

If its still not working then Roberto should do exactly what he did last week and move Barry to LB and throw in Deulofeu.

Get Oveido on the pitch! He's showed promise, was brought in to be back-up to Baines and probably his eventual replacement so give him a little run. These situations are when these players get there chance to impress and/or improve.

The only way he will learn and improve is by playing. Those chances are at a minimum being behind Baines. If he can't get a game now why on earth have him here!

As for formation....No need to change! If oveido's stinking the place out, move Barry to LB and Delefoe on in place of Oveido.

Playing Distin at LB gives him some flexibility in formation, can go from a 4-2-3-1 to a 3-4-3 or whichever 3 at the back formation you like. The irony there is that if it's a 3 man defense, Oviedo is the best candidate at wing back on the left side.

Barry isn't a LB. He was ball watching too much and was done for pace far too often. Job done, but he was badly exposed. He was inserted there simply because Martinez didn't want to waste a bench spot on a guy who plays only left back in the formation (Oviedo).

The team is playing well and the simplest way to fill the void is to replace Baines with Oviedo, like for like.

You can't judge Barry's ability to play left back from a stint where he was moved in the latter stages of a high drama, high intensity match like the one on Saturday. His mind still would have been in midfield, whole different story when you're prepared to play that position from the get go with a week of training behind you.

A week of training isn't going to change that either. Plus, we're worse in the middle without him.

This

Barry is needed more in midfield than at LB

We have an international calibre LB in the team who will be playing in the World Cup next year

Would be madness to move another player out of position when said position can easily be filled by someone who actually does it as his day job

But we have an international calibre CB in Heitinga, a International calibre CF in Jelavic.... doesnt mean they are suited/capable of prospering in the often frenetic premier league.

If shuffling the play allows us to have a forward 3 of Deulofeu, Pienaar and Mirrallas behind Lukaku then I think its worth the risk as much as throwing in an untried LB.

Again, would rather have Distin there and put John Stones or Heitinga in at CB. Id even go as far to say id rather have Tony Hibbert. Its not that i doubt Oviedos football ability, its just the fact he weighs about 2 1/2 kg.

One option, provided Stones is good enough to start, is him at RB with Coleman at LB.

But I'd be inclined to say Oviedo atm.

Barry can do a job at LB but his lack of pace may be exploited.

At least we've got a few options.

Of course it would. It's nonsense to suggest otherwise.

*sigh*

Mikey.... He plays for Costa Rica.

Do you know if there are any other half decent left backs who are Costa Rican ?
