2019/20 Carlo Ancelotti

We love this mysterious idea about mentality. I’m sure it plays a part but a less important one than people suggest.
Its not mysterious. Its bleeding obvious that mentality is a massive issue.
More important is just setting a team up well with players asked to do things they can actually do.
Well that counts out Ancelotti asking the team to ever play football then doesn't it.......

Davies actually understands what a derby means. Absolutely insane, NOT to start him in this game.

He's the only one in the squad who get's it. Quality wasn't really the issue today, they started kids nobody has ever heard of.

It was 100% mentality, effort, resilience and organisation. And that's why it's all on Carlo.

Think people are getting a bit too distracted by irrelevancies.

It’s just about a game of football. That involves picking eleven players that you think suit a game plan, motivating them to run and tackle and do the things that the game plan requires.

And quite simply: the personnel he picked did not suit the plan, the plan didn't suit the game, and the players didn't look motivated or hungry.

That doesn’t mean Carlo out or whatever. He needs time to understand the squad, alter it, find a system that works etc. But today was a huge failure on basic requirements.
We were awful today, but we could/should have been 3 or 4 up at HT.

If we’d finished our dinner in the first half, we wouldn’t be having that discussion.

The second half might well have been the worst 45mins of football I’ve ever seen from an Everton side, but I sincerely doubt Ancelotti’s half time instructions were: “right lads, I want you to go out and not only fail to show an ounce of fight or energy, I also want you (including the 8 or 9 of you who are full international level players) to completely forget how to complete 5 yard passes or even to pass the ball forwards”

Today (and particularly the 2nd 45) was an utter failure of the playing staff.

Are there some extenuating factors? Sure, to an extent - the majority of them were clearly out on their feet - a result of going into and through the hectic Christmas schedule with a massively depleted squad, and those who remained having to play too much football in too short a time... but there was no excuse for the complete lack of effort, particularly from those two who started in central midfield.

Sigurdsson was woeful in that second half - in the first he still least put in a few balls and was involved in 2 or 3 of the chances we should have buried, but in the second half, he genuinely might as well not have been there.

And Schneiderlin.... Morgan Schneiderlin. There aren’t words strong enough to express my utter disdain for that man, that wouldn’t get me booted from this site.

The sight of him strolling around the pitch, putting in not even 1% effort, even after we were losing 1-0 to a bunch of kids... If I never see him in an Everton shirt again it will be far too soon. An utter disgrace to the badge and not worthy of being allowed to call himself an Everton player for a moment longer.

Mentality is trotted out whenever we lose, Anfield or not. Standard boring football cliché. I’m sure it matters at some point but not to the extent people make out. We seemed to develop a good mentality in the Pickford derby all of a sudden, because we played well and the players suited the system.

Agreed we shouldn’t be trying to play football from the back with that central midfield. It doesn’t suit the players. It worked against teams that don’t press high like Burnley or don’t press well like Newcastle. I think these players need more direct football, certainly with current injuries.

Carlo would've learned a harsh lesson today.

I don't think he realised the extent of the rot within his current team.

In a way I'm glad because it is now up to him to resolve it.

That's why he's paid lads!

If he can't fix it I just dunno...

Give him time lads. His illustrious career buys him that time don't you think?

Definitely not, but players need to be directed to put that effort in. As sad as it seems, that’s how it is. It’s not coincidence that in the games Duncan managed we suddenly started doing it.

Beyond basic effort levels, I don’t know how people can complain about Sigurdsson and Schneiderlin and NOT have a problem with the game strategy. It was all about going through them to get it out wide, something neither of them can be trusted to do under pressure. After five minutes they should immediately have reverted to a different plan that involved bypassing the midfield at all costs. Ancelotti wants to play good football, but put that on the back burner for now. We don’t have the players available to do it.

It gets trotted out because there's truth to it. Worse teams then us beat better teams then that lot in more presurised environments all the time. We haven't won a single major game of true significance in decades. The last time I remeber us winning a game of true significance was against Man Utd in the FA Cup semi-final in 09. There's a losers mentality and a meek acceptance of mediocrity embedded into the club where we just shrug off bad defeats and move on to the next one. Where instead of being angry about losing the derby the players will cower away until they fluke a win against an okish side and then pretend that everything is alright.

What is the "Pickford derby"? Surely you're not referring to the 0-0 at Goodison last season and pretending that that game showed good mentality?! I mean we showed fight at times sure but it was just a draw, which is what we played for and I defo enjoyed effectively costing them the title but it was hardly a sign of great mentality from the team. Playing for a draw and being happy about getting it is not a good mentality.

We have the worst midfield in the league edge, slow, cant pick a pass and worst of all they dont put in any effort
they have no athleticism, no pride and no bottle, you see it all the time can't get near the opposition so drag them down or a silly foul that if they get remotely near them.
Saying that it's right throughout the team, unless they are really quick.thinking on the pitch or have really good skill its a minimum in the modern game to be at least able to keep up.

The only thing I can think is he doesn't know the players, he's hardly seen them in training and he's going of reputation

We were really poor in that United game, against their B team too! Lose that penalty shoot out and people would be putting it down to mentality. Indeed, i remember coming out of Wembley and thinking we were lucky they played a second string team. Pickford derby: the 1-0 defeat where he threw one onto Origi’s head. Even though we eventually lost, nobody was complaining about mentality (of the outfield players) then because we played well. We played well because we had a system that suited the players.
