2020/21 Carlo Ancelotti

I was using it as an example of how the idea that managers always need loads of time to get teams playing a certain way is a bit ludicrous, mate.

If we were going to see an 'identity' from Ancelotti's Everton, we'd have it by now. We haven't, and I don't think we will. That's not to say we can't be successful under Carlo, I just don't think he's that type of coach.

But, as I said to Groucho, to me, players being able to string basic moves together shouldn't count as an 'identity'.

I suppose my point would be, even managers who have identities generally only have them when their team wins.

When a team loses they look badly. You look at some of the heavy defeats Bielsa has had, and the way he surrendered in the FA Cup to Crawley, and he doesnt survive that here. It's a different set of expectations that lead to needing a more pragmatic coach.

What subs would you have made.
Coleman was id imagine gassed after 3 games for Ireland. James rarely plays 90 mins .
One sub was enforced early doors.
We missed 3 one on ones and maybe 3 more half chances .

Coleman was fine. He was pushing Palace back. If he really needed to come off, then the change had to be King, to keep offering a threat, and a switch to a flat four with Holgate going to right-back.

Personally, I'd have just pushed Holgate into midfield, and gone to a four. Give some extra legs and kept James on for 5-10 mins more to get his foot on the ball and just keep things in control for us.

I don't think that's true. We all know how Klopp, Pep, Bielsa, Rodgers etc want to play - win or lose.

Again, to me that isn't the be-all and end-all. I'm not bothered about an identity as such. I am bothered about our team not being able to do simple things very well.

That’s the biggest flaw in this team - they simply can’t manage possession- players don’t make angles for each other and when the centre half’s attempt a pass longer than 10 yds they just give it aback to the opposition.
Agree we don't control the game then we drop further and further back it felt inevitable that we would concede.

Leicester and Leipzig will never be bigger clubs than Everton. Never.

They’d also never lay down £500m+ on a new stadium.

Everton are one of the true huge clubs in the English game that just need the right manager.

A washed up Ancelotti isn’t that man.
Don't think they will be or are bigger clubs but we're also not that huge and we're pretty crap and have been for a long time.

He did play badly but he was thrown in to play at right wing-back, next to Keane who was all over the shop, and came cold into the game up against Zaha who was playing extremely well.

So yes, he played badly, but the manager should have known that probably wasn't the most sensible thing to do?

Yes the manager takes some blame as I've said. But thats no excuse for the player making a basic error. Godfrey switched off and it cost us a goal. He has to be better than that.

I'm happy to give him time too.

But we're a team - a club - that cries out for an identity. Carlo is a manager that has never had one. That's not to take away from his achievements, but we genuinely get outplayed by pretty much every team we face. That's a worry.

Now, I know we need better players, and Brands is a lucky man to be staying on, if he is, IMO, because our squad is so imbalanced and it's paper thin. But I'm not having that they can't be working on stuff like 'passing to team-mates' in training. Without James, who can't be relied on as good as he is, we have no way of playing with the footy. It's just hit and hope. Again, 16 months in (apologies for the poor maths) I'd expect better.
I think if Carlo found an identity that works he would stick with it? I think he would play a 433 if everyone was fit but they never are. Would be continue to tinker if we were winning? I agree we need to be better at controlling possession but surely he knows this? It's all moot really, yes Carlo has questions to answer but the squad is not good enough.

I think it is going to be awfully hard for a team that can't recruit the top, top players to be top 4 and competitive in cups without a solid understanding of a system that will allow for strong continuity that makes up the talent gap.

But we now have the resources and will soon have the infrastructure in place.

If we’re happy with bobbing around 8th place with the odd Europa League campaign, I doubt the owner would be shelling out over half a billion on a new stadium.

Until the midfield injury situation changes, or new players are brought in, it might not get any better than this. What would a new manager do? Carlo has tried a back 3, a midfield diamond, a 442, 4231, 433. Whatever he does though we still have the problems that we have one of the slowest midfields in the league, no one who can look after the ball at right back, and the slowest centreback pairing in the league in Mina and Keane. I don’t know what tactical formation any manager could pick to get more out of the same ingredients. The one thing he hasn’t done is Holgate in midfield but who knows if he’s seen this in training and realised he’s as poor on the ball there as he is at right back.

Silva had a similar group of players at 15 points from 15 games after they fell off a cliff once Gueye and Zouma left.

All the power and pace has been shorn from this squad. We injected a bit back in in the summer with Docuoure Godfrey and Allan but when they all don’t play we look slow and weak. We need pace power and technique all over the park. We don’t have it. We can’t just keep trying to get managers to make a silk purse from utter rubbish. Get ruthless, get these sorry excuses for footballers out and get some proper players in. Gomes Davies Siggurdson Keane are terrible, Coleman and Mina aren’t much better either.

The Godfrey sub turned out to be a very bad one. But it was only a bad sub because Godfrey played badly. He is capable of playing a lot better and doesn't usually switch off like he did.

There was no reason for the player to struggle so badly. Yes maybe the manager will now have learned not to use the player on the right of defence but equally the player should be asking why they played so poorly and more importantly, how can they improve next week. Players can't just hide behind their boss. They control their own destiny once they step on the pitch.
100 per cent this. Godfrey has been very good all season. Today he was not
