Champions League revamp

As much as I'm not a huge fan of the man, Simon Jordan is adamant this is all just bargaining and brinkmanship and a deal will be reached between clubs and UEFA.

He's usually right on this sort of thing, and I tend to agree.
It's just seems a bit too far down the road for it just to be brinkmanship? All guesswork tbh

Absolutely. It's always been about getting more leverage on UEFA competitions - they'll get what they want in the end but regardless should still face sanctions for bringing the game into disrepair. It's a power move and an utter disgrace.

I've been a bit slow on this and haven't delved in too much.

So, based on my half arsed understanding...

Several clubs are permanent members. Others qualify? I assume this is based on league standing? So does that mean the champions league places become available for lower placed clubs? Or, it really isn't a champions league is it, by that definition!

The finances look interesting. Loans? Repayable based on success of the format. Ohhhh, seeing it tank could be fun.

Also, does this mean the champions league and Europa league are less lucrative?

Proper information is thin on the ground, mostly just speculation and assumption. But they have said there are 12 permanent members confirmed with 3 more still to be confirmed. There would be 5 places open to different teams each year. But they have not said how these 5 places would be allocated. I guess this will all depend on how the negotiations with Uefa and other domestic leagues go.

I think there is an assumption that without some of the biggest clubs in football the Uefa competitions will be less attractive to audiences and therefore would generate less money through advertising. That's probably a fair assumption, even if it was a short term one.

And whatever is agreed it will no doubt make it even harder for teams like Everton to compete. Disgraceful.

It’s all being driven by clubs with huge debts to cover.

psg said no because the owner is in very good terms with Ceferin, aka friends, and owns beIN media group which, guess what? yes, they cover champions league and he'd lose a lot of money. :)

Is this another of your well established "facts"?

What are the perks of the ESL, by the way? Curious to what your insight may be?

Maybe, but for maximum leverage you usually have to convince the other side of the table that you are 100% serious. Leaving the ECA is either extreme brinkmanship or it's for real. I tend to think it could be a final attempt at maximum leverage.
