Champions League revamp

The biggest clubs in Europe all thrive on being one of a very small handful of clubs that dominate their leagues. The inherent fatal flaw in this "super" league is only one team can win. Do you think Man United fans will tolerate regular 9th place finishes? This super league is like the Death Star. Frightening, evil, but flawed by design.
From an ownership perspective, if it makes them more.money, I have a feeling they won't care what place they finish each year.

Oh no, that one is easy - international selection is at the discretion of the international bodies. If they disallow selection for any reason, that's the end of it. They dictate the eligibility.
I agree. What I badly explained was that a player may have a legal option to end their contract if their clubs actions prevent them from playing in international football tournaments.

The contracts will definitely state the competitions they'd be expected to compete in, just like any employment contract would state where you would be based.

I can say that confidently. Unless they had the mad foresight to state "or any other competition the club enters" then yeah, there's wiggle room - but it'd literally have to use the word "or"; if it's "and" they're goosed.
I suspect they are contracted to the club, so they play where and when the club says.

But as I say, I doubt its something we can resolve.

But they don't have to cancel contracts, once a player wants to leave, he normally gets his wish.

It's not clear under the by-laws that the Prem can kick them out, or that they have the resolve to do so.

I think that the former would stand up in court; the latter is the key open question, with ample and persuasive arguments pro and con.
The Prem holds all the cards regardless. If they're not allowed to kick them out then they simply don't take their midweek unsanctioned games into account when arranging fixtures. Very quickly the clubs involved won't be able to fulfill their fixtures one way or another.

If the Premier League have to give permission, and they have clearly said they won’t, how is this not the end of it?
this in itself seems like a breach of contract and may well allow the EPL to take drastic action, possibly suing for loss of earnings, all sorts of civil litigation could come from this, this could put the whole English game in limbo for years. Truly despicable greed.

I would love it to get this petty, I really would. Popcorn time.

There’s two buttons in front of the EPL 14 tomorrow. Reset or Self Destruct. They might as well press the Reset button and hope it works because there is no third button.
The problem is the 14 are not homogenous in their aims. Burnley, Brighton, Crystal Palace and the like need the renegade six to keep the PL TV value inflated. None are serious about ever competing in top level European competition. Everton, Aston Villa, Leicester, and West Ham would have very different ambitions. Leeds and Wolves would prize consolidation and then progress. They will not present a united front.

I expect a compromise to eventually emerge. Bayern Munich will be the bridge to this as Karl-Heinz Rummenigge straddles UEFA, the ECA, and the renegades. Bayern would have to be in a super league for obvious reasons, but cannot be due to the power German fans wield over their clubs. He is, by default, the one who sees both sides of the story. I can't see the renegades being ejected in the end. Points could well be docked, but turkeys will not vote for Christmas.

Personally think these clubs vastly overestimate the power of an individual club brand over the brand of a league or association.

I don't know the numbers, but it certainly seems like English football has grown wildly over the past few years with traditional powers such as United and Arsenal relatively struggling and teams without the previous global appeal (City, Leicester) achieving.

It certainly helps to have these brands and stuff, but I personally think most casual international fans enter football by way of the the World Cup/Internationals and then start watching a domestic club competition.

Big clubs exist because those competitions have built them up to be big clubs over the past 30 years and keep shoving them on the cover of FIFA.
