We can confirm that we have formally commenced procedures to withdraw from the group developing proposals for a European Super League (ESL).

Chairman Daniel Levy said: “We regret the anxiety and upset caused by the ESL proposal. We felt it was important that our club participated in the development of a possible new structure that sought to better ensure financial fair play and financial sustainability whilst delivering significantly increased support for the wider football pyramid.

“We believe that we should never stand still and that the sport should constantly review competitions and governance to ensure the game we all love continues to evolve and excite fans around the world.

“We should like to thank all those supporters who presented their considered opinions.”

"Last one out, turn out the lights."

This isn't over. Big Picture was meant to succeed by inviting us and West ham to be second tier participants to get the votes needed, but failed. Their non-apologies then were indicative of their arrogance as they simply went away to find a way around the 14 not playing ball. The result was this attempt to unilaterally circumvent the PL and other 14 instead.

They have now seen the types of opposition they faced in terms of fifa and uefa player bans, and govt legislation and weren't in a position to overcome this. Yet.

Having seen the obstacles they will go away, regroup and ensure next time they have a way to defeat these and try again. Absolutely no question about it.

Im not so sure - I think they will be looking at exit strategies. FSG will have had a 6 fold return on their investment. ESL was the Big Play, it has failed; they will cash out their chips, likewise with Kronke and the Glazers most likely

The 14 teams are pathetic and deserve everything they get if some form of punishment isnt taken.

If there is a way to punish the owners then I'm all for it. I just dont see how it can be done.

If I was representing one of the 14 clubs I would definitely refuse to cooperate with anyone involved in the ESL project. You can't collaborate with someone you can't trust.

As I said earlier, I dont see much appetite from other clubs for this to get bloody.

I suspect a lot of people will be seeing this as a victory.

WE stopped it, now we make sure it cant happen again.
they deserve what they will get in a few years time then, the little 14 and the rest of football will be cast aside. The warning is here, the warning is now, ignore it and face the consequences. There HAS to be consequences for this despicable power/money grab

Rule 9. Except with the prior written approval of the board, during the season a club shall not enter or play its senior men’s first team in any competition other than

L.9.1 – The UEFA Champions League
L.9.2 – The UEFA Europa League
L.9.3 – The FA Cup
L.9.4 – The FA Community Shield
L.9.5 – The Football League Cup or
L.9.6 – Competitions sanctioned by the County Association of which it is a member

Think you would struggle to punish someone for breaking this before a ball has been kicked or any fixtures or dates put into the calendar. Would get messy legally. I don't think the PL will pursue it. They should but they won't.
As someone who worked on legal matters for 3-4 years in the Government department I worked in, let me take you through what the PL/UEFA's legal team would hone in on.

'...a club shall not enter its senior men’s first team in any competition...'
1. The clubs publicly announced their entry into a new competition. Statements were made, and published.
2. The new 'European Super league' (the Competition) issued a press statement to the effect of the formation of the new league, and its initial constituent members.
3. Notwithstanding the 'no promotion or relegation' scenario, it is a competition based on two opposing teams competing on a field of play.
4. In terms of semantics, the ordinary legal construction placed upon the word 'shall' is directive, not optional. 'Shall not' is therefore directive.
The above four points prove beyond any shadow of a doubt that the European Super League' was a competition with 12 founding members and its complement to be increased by invitation to other teams.

You don't have to kick a ball, or have any fixtures or dates put into a calendar for something to be classed as a competition. The youth teams that I ran had to apply to the local Sunday League youth association (affiliated to the County FA) for admission each season. You were then accepted ever before fixtures or dates were set in a calendar (obviously - you cannot put the proverbial cart before the horse!). So your claim is demolished in one simple point.

I hope the foregoing clarifies things for you.

The only way to punish these guys is financially and the only way to punish them financially is to keep them out of lucrative European competitions and off the TV slots.
