Champions League revamp

They’ve lost any opportunity to ever proclaim themselves as the biggest and best clubs in the country ever again. They’ve got no heritage, no traditions, no values, they stand for nothing but corporate greed. I don’t want to ever hear all that nonsense guff from Carragher and Neville ever again about how United and Liverpool are special clubs, different, traditional clubs.

They’re a gang of scabs and always will be. Bottom feeder rat ships.

If there is a will to punish these clubs it can be done. They could take it to the highest court in the land if they wanted, but they probably wouldn't. They know the repuatational damage they've siffered is catastrophic and to challenge any punishment would be seen as beyond the pale.

There is no way this can go back in the box with 6 apologies (or 5 plus Liverpool's insulting comment). No way at all. Anyone who thinks that this can go unpunished is dealing in abstractions. The only debate now is over just what punishment they receive. It could be financial or points deductions. Starting them all off with a 10 to 15 point deduction next season and massive fines would be them getting off lightly, but it could assuage many.
I wonder whether these clubs have Jedi's working for them (obviously joking, they just have the media in their pockets).

They furlough their staff, backtrack and get hailed for their compassion in reversing the decision.

They then have secret discussions over project restart, backtrack and get hailed for their understanding their fans and showing contrition.

Now they sign a secret agreement to set up a new euro league and resign from the existing European club association, then backtrack and get hailed by the media for listening to the fans and walking away from their closed shop.

I honestly think we'll be having these same discussions next year, with the same outcome (or lack of).

Rule 9. Except with the prior written approval of the board, during the season a club shall not enter or play its senior men’s first team in any competition other than

L.9.1 – The UEFA Champions League
L.9.2 – The UEFA Europa League
L.9.3 – The FA Cup
L.9.4 – The FA Community Shield
L.9.5 – The Football League Cup or
L.9.6 – Competitions sanctioned by the County Association of which it is a member

Think you would struggle to punish someone for breaking this before a ball has been kicked or any fixtures or dates put into the calendar. Would get messy legally. I don't think the PL will pursue it. They should but they won't.

The key wording is "enter or play".

Perez and the attorneys have been very careful on this one. They will argue that they did neither. They signed a letter of intent for a competition that was never established. Obviously, they never played. They will argue that they did not enter.

Against that is popular sentiment, which good research does show that US courts, at least, do take into account. I would guess that they think they can stall the case long enough for the outrage to blow over, so that they can get their narrow, pedantic decision over wording if it comes to that.

All of that does not preclude the 14 clubs from kicking them out on general principles, citing 9(L) if desired or hanging it on damage to English football and their brands, rewriting the rules to suit their liking, and only permitting them to rejoin on their terms.

Well done football. Now the governing bodies need to remain strong, see this for what it was and make sure it never happens again. Only way you do that is punishment.

Even if they just force the 50+1 rule on them that would ensure it doesnt happen again.

Would let the staff/players/manager off whilst still punishing owners.

The idea was leaked a while ago and dismissed as just thoughts and nothing happened. Well it obviously wasnt - they were mid planning.

Now they have attempted it and failed, so if nothing happens, next time they will attempt it and succeed.
I'm actually a bit sceptical about the 50 + 1 model. I'm ok with it even though it would maybe hurt our spending power but im not sure how much widespread support there would be.

It would be very sustainable in the long run but its a huge change for English football. Whether there is actually the will out there for it, I'm not sure tbh.

And they can never brag about “six times la”, cos it was a competition they tried to destroy.

I love your optimism but do you think the likes of Palace's , Brighton's and Newcastle's rage will dampened by the relief they will feel with the knowledge that their TV and gate money will be safer for the near future ?
On a personal note , I'm glad you managed to pop in before the day's end .
I'm just a fan
