Champions League revamp

What that type of "fan" is missing, obviously, is the emotional attachment we have to the game that comes from supporting a club. So for them, the novelty of watching even the world's best clubs play each other all the time, often in meaningless games, would quickly fade. Ninth-place United vs. 12th-place Liverpool with nothing at stake? Nah, when's the darts on?

They were also probably drawn into football because of the atmosphere. They don't seem to realize that an ESL kills that atmosphere pretty quickly.

from todays Football 365 mediawatch:

The parable of Klopp
In the actual Daily Mirror, David Maddock is busy re-writing history in his piece about JW Henry, Liverpool and most importantly Jurgen Klopp.

We are promised the story about ‘HOW KLOPP & HIS TEAM DESTROYED EURO PLAN’ as if it really wasn’t anything to do with the fans or the media at all. And absolutely nothing to do with decisions at Chelsea and Manchester City forcing a climbdown across the board. It was all destroyed by Jurgen Klopp and his players. The whole shebang.

‘Courageously spoke out’? We presume that Maddock is writing about a private discussion here because Klopp did not ‘courageously’ do anything on Monday night on Sky Sports. He merely said that his opinion on the subject had not changed and then later – in a press conference – he said: “No, I do not think it is a great idea.”

And then he argued with Gary Neville and had a pop at Leeds United for their shirts. There was far more ire in those comments than in any reaction to his club’s Super League plans.

Really? What was it about these words…

…that had Henry running scared? Klopp was diplomatic on Monday night; he absolutely did not publicly come out fighting against the Super League, as some would now have you believe.

‘Speak out passionately’? This is just weird now. That’s simply not what happened.

If ‘Klopp’s anger exploded’ (exploded!), then he kept it really well hidden on Monday night.

By saying “I don’t think I am let down by FSG”? That must have taken some real nerve; that will have got them rattled.

We are then told that ‘others followed’. Well, what choice did they have? He is the messiah, after all.

Frankly, that is an insult to Guardiola, who genuinely did speak passionately, saying: “It is not a sport if success is guaranteed or if it doesn’t matter when you lose. I have said many times I want a successful Premier League, not just one team at the top.”

The idea that he was somehow emboldened by Klopp ‘passionately’ saying “no, I do not think it is a great idea” is frankly ludicrous.
Milner is the only one who deserves any respect

Sadly its not even just the overseas fans.

Don't get me wrong you can easily be a proper fan from overseas, loads are and their voice when it comes to what happens on the pitch in terms of personnel etc is just as valid as anybody else's but at no point should they be allowed a voice that effects the match going fans who live it every day rather than just have to turn a telly on.

I saw plenty of "John from Gwent" type fans of the "big" clubs saying they wanted the ESL too. If a person doesn't integrate with a clubs fan base and understand the ethos of a club, the rivalries etc then they are not a real fan. It's like Tory fans of Merseyside clubs, why on earth do they support a clubs like us?
Very good point about integrating with the club and supporters.
If john doe from Philadelphia wants to take the time to read about the history of the club and its ethos, understand the importance of the clubs presence in the community, and just feels a connection, welcome aboard. But adam adams from California that still can't get his head around relegation, 0-0's, and the fact that just because a team were successful when you started supporting them doesn't mean they'll always be successful , then you're not wanted.
It's not gatekeeping. It's knowing when it's not that someone doesn't get it but someone that doesn't want to get it.

If they were working on this for 3 years then I smell a rat with this notion that nobody besides the owners and CEOs knew that entire time.

Klopp and the players might not have know WHEN it was coming but I don't doubt that they knew it WAS coming.

To be fair I think we all knew it would happen at some point.

I don't think anybody had half 10 at night on a random midweek day in the middle of a pandemic whilst the season is still running though.

I’ve been thinking about the timing of it and it makes no sense.
Was the original journo briefed or was there a whistle blower ?

My point is that I have a feeling the managers and captains had some awareness their bosses were trying for this before Sunday.
I very much doubt that the managers didn't have an inkling about this before it broke. Not to sure about the players.
They would all have NDA's in their contracts so they are legally obliged to keep quiet about it. But I just don't accept
that Liverpool & City would not have discussed a single word about it with Klopp & Guardiola before it broke.
That is just not a realistic scenario.
