Champions League revamp

On the hook to JP Morgan?
It feels like there’s some contractual agreement of some sort that’s keeping this farce going.

I wondered if it was to do with the last club standing netting the withdrawal fees from the other 11.

Other than that, you may be right. Perhaps there’s some sort of guarantor agreement that could be costly for certain Pérezes when it formally ends.

On the hook to JP Morgan?

I said right from the outset, I'd imagine some clubs are in this more deeply this than others. I am surprised United and Liverpool are not on the inner circle, but I think we can see that Juventus and Madrid (with Barcelona just behind) are the 3 teams who are most involved in this.

Now there is obviously an issue of pride, and no doubt a view that if they can just get the thing up and running, others may re-consider. I think the bigger issue is though- what has been signed and what has been guaranteed.

In deals like this, it's rare big banks put up lots of capital without specific guarantees. When you get a mortgage it is generally your house and deposit. For a super league they will want more guarentees than that, and I suspect Madrid and Juventus are the ones left carrying the can for those payments if it doesn't happen. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there is a huge fee repayable if it never happens- and they are the guarantors of it. So from their perspective, if they maintain it can go ahead, potentially legally they have some sort of defence.

Again it's not unusual in these situations that the profits, or the interest payments over 20 years were also liable to be paid (so on a mortgage you are often liable not just for the capital but also all outstanding interest due).

So essentially what you have in this situation is a clusterf*ck. You ahve big institutions who have wasted time, money, effort and experties without getting anything back because people have reneged on a contract they've signed. It's rare that goes down well, or without substantial litigation and financial repurcussions. This is not dropping out of your mates stag do.

You will have the "money men" behind the ESL looking to hold those 3 guarantors responsible. The 3 guarantors may well defend themselves on the basis that no payment is due if it goes ahead and/or may well argue that the "money men" either go after the 9 other clubs directly who have broken contract, or alternatively they may be able to do so themselves (so if it could be established them breaking a contract has cost them money).

I see a lot of road left to run in this and the 3 clubs actions probably being dictated to them by lawyers.

It's collapsing officially in days.

Perez keeps saying the clubs who left will have to pay €300 million each, that is not the case on a certain date in June if 70% of participants have pulled out making the ESL defunct and those fines obsolete, right now it's at 75%.

That's the reason those 3 clubs are not budging as they want one club to change their mind before that date in June to keep the ESL alive , once that day passes with no change then UEFA will announce little fines, tiny slaps on the wrist and welcoming those 3 clubs back to the "Uefa family".

Are you stressing a bit @HongKongToffee ?

No M'Bappe for you and the lads eh

They are still claiming it isn't dead after they let a press release saying there won't be any additional action taken against the Spanish and Italian ( not Ratacelotti ) rats .

UEFA have lost their appeal against the ESL3 - Barca, RM and Juve.
The Spanish Court has asked the ECJ to rule on whether UEFA have the right to stop clubs from forming their own (competitor) competition.
If the ECJ rule against UEFA, the whole ESL thing could well re-surface.
