Comedians - Rate & Hate

If you ever listen to the old XFM shows he did with Merchant and Karl Pilkington you realise a lot of his stand up and even bits from his TV shows is rehashed material from those shows.
I didn't know that! Was that the show where he did Rockbusters? My mate got me on to them years ago haha, they're brilliant.

Recently watched The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling and George Carlins American Dream docs on HBO. I'd highly recommend both if you are a fan of the craft of stand up in general. For me absolute masters the both of them

Also Jerry Seinfeld's Comedian is fantastic

Been meaning to read Sick In The Head, Judd Apatows book that comes from interviews with comedians about their work

Rate - Ross Noble, Lee Mack, Henning Ven (sp?)
Hate - Sarah Millican ... hate isn't the correct word, I just don't find her the slightest bit funny.

Its nothing against her, but she's purely there because of her disability. Its painful at times and not even funny. The false laughs from guests are cringeworthy.
Correct. Definitely nothing against her or her disability but for me she can't deliver a joke in the way that works. The joke may be funny its just not timed right. Fair play to her for achieving what she's done though.

Someone in work was telling me Frankie Boyle has done a U-turn with his comedy recently, isn't he meant to be [Poor language removed] now? I used to find him hilarious on MTW.

The newest low is the blind lad going around the world with his "funniest mates" making lame jokes about the things he can't see.
He's ok, IMO. He's not belly laughs funny, but he is amusing.

The fact that he's a Kopite is irritating though.

There's never been a Kopite comedian I've ever liked that much. To be a great comedian you have to have authenticity that you're genuinley 'out there'...and we all know that if you support Liverpool then that tends to suggest authenticity isn't your thing.

Alexie Sayle is the obvious exception, but he's always been quite good about Everton in his books.

Historically as a story teller Dave Allen was genius, his comedy sketches not quite so good though!
Favourite all time comedian - Billy Connolly by some distance, seen him twice live and thought I would die laughing both times! Gervais can be great at times.
Hate, might be a bit strong, but Bishop, McIntryre, Carr, Millican, Whitehall, and one or two others can all get in the proverbial bin!

Bit disappointed with Sayle. He was the patron of a homeless charity in London where I volunteered for two years and we never saw him. Whereas Stewart Lee did a couple of brilliant free gigs to raise money.

It's great that Stewart Lee did that. Isn't putting your name down as patron mostly decorative though? Good if you can go the extra mile, like.
