Computer games.

I hated Dead Island too. Massive let down.

Is Dying Light similar in that you build your weapons and so on?

No mate. You collect weapons as you go but you can upgrade them with things like poison and fire, which is dead weird for a game set in an otherwise real-world setting. I haven't made much use of that part of it though, to be honest.

The free running aspect makes it a lot better than Dead Island and the controls are miles ahead. Dead Island felt like a beta to me.

Nice one. I am intrigued by it for sure.

I'm still waiting for my ideal zombie game to be made. Some sort of GTA:Zombies would probably be it.

Got SR: IV from Boomerang the other day. The opening hour was great, I really enjoyed it. I think I played number 2 years ago for a bit but just never really got into it but this one looks decent

I only played Dead Island briefly and hated it, but i guess it is quite similar. This game is far better though.

Dead Island had potential, delivered on about 20% of it.

Dying Light had more potential, delivered on about 75% of it.

It's a good game. The parkour element is great fun and makes running through the city a blast. The co-op is boss too.

However there are some flaws/weird design choices. The main story is woeful, absolutely woeful. The plot is predictable, the characters are empty and most bizarrely of all, almost all of the story missions are linear and in cramped areas. Which is mad as the game is all about running freely and leaping across rooftops. However the side missions are great. Bar a few "collect X of Y" missions most of them have really good, often touching stories with interesting characters and fun, varied gameplay. It's almost like 2 separate teams designed the side and main missions.

Again, in terms of good meeting bad, the co-op is seamless and makes the game much more fun. YET, you all play as the same character: another generic macho white guy template. Just weird really, you think they'd at least let you customise what he looks like. When you're playing the story with a friend NPCs act like there's only one of you there and you fuse together during cutscenes. The most unforgivable bit is the finale, where it actually boots you out of co-op and says it must be done alone. And it ends with a QTE ffs. A QTE. Jesus.

The combat is great fun. Very weighty and visceral, occasionally even unsettling. As you get more powerful you get a lot of satisfaction being able to behead zombies that earlier on took a whole lotta beating with a pipe to take down. You could say they give you too much power too quickly though, as later on you will get bored at how overpowered you are. That said, there's a cool hard more if you want the challenge back. The freerunning is boss, and the game becomes a better Spiderman game than any Spiderman game once you get the grappling hook. Quite possibly the most fun I've had merely moving around a sandbox.

I could go on for ages here but I'll just say, it's an odd one. So much potential and to be fair, most of it is realised. However it's let down by some bizarre design decisions and occasional laziness. That said, there is so much right. The parkour is brilliant, the combat very fun, the co-op is a blast, the side missions are ace and the devs are very active, constantly tweaking and adding FREE content. The only reason the few let downs frustrate so much is because this game could have been a genuinely great one. I am very much looking forward to the inevitable sequel though.

tl;dr: Some weird design choices stop greatness, but this is a game that knows what fun is and how to achieve it. Hard to believe it's made by the same people who made Dead Island and the hilariously awful Dead Island: Riptide.
