Confederations Cup

You're having a laugh.

Really.

Are England a better squad all the way around?

Yes.

Would they destroy us 10 out of 10 times?

Not even close.

(EDIT: Andorra, Kazakhstan, etc??? Yes, Europe has their cupcakes too my friend. In fact, in a one off match, I'd easily take Costa Rica and Honduras over those two teams.)

Its just banter Bill, you really need to take what I say with a pinch of salt.........

But have the US EVER beaten England at "soccer"? :(

I think you are showing your age Goat.

I bet if I said the words "Graham Taylor", you wouldn't feel a cold shiver run through you, would you?

As for the Italy (World Champions, remember them?) vs. USA match, the red card (completely unwarranted as at most, a yellow) changed the whole complexion of the match.

The USA was growing in confidence and playing very well after weathering the initial Italian possession/attack. Italy wasn't their usual self today but give credit where credit is due. When it was 11 v 11, it was a very even contest.

Clark should feel hard done by for being sent off as he was arguably the USA's man of the match up to that point.

After that, it was all Italy as to be expected.

Very disapponted as we should have gotten something out of this match. Very disappointing.

It was like Clattenberg was refing this match. Donovan all but got buried alive in the 80th minute. Clark's red was a joke.

On the other hand, the 1st half I thought we thought we played great, the best I've seen us play in a long long time. The 2nd well we should have gotten a 2nd pen and there isn't too much any club in the world going to do against the world champs w/ 10 men and we kept it tight and had a couple good scoring chances for a while until finally succumbing to fatigue.

Bradley was bossing the middle and linking up well with Donovan in the attack. He picked off Italy clean at least 4-5 times and won almost every 50-50 ball. Its looking like he's getting more freedom moving forward. Donovan always manages to not show up in big games (not counting Mexico) but he played well today. I've been one of his biggest critics but when he's playing well he could really control the middle.

Feinhaber made some dumb mistakes but he also made some killer long passes. If Clark/Bradley play as well as they did in the middle, we could live with the mistakes.

I really liked the lineup we had today. Spector is growing on me and DeMerit is a better defender than Bocanerga.

Bornstein was a little out of his league against Italy but I like his game against most other squads. Altidore needs improvement as a target man he's improving in that dept and is the best we got if McBride doesn't come back. Plus he's only 19 (looks about 35 though now) and was kind of used as a pawn in Spain at Xerez (they got him to keep a rival in Serie B from getting him) so hopefully he'll get more PT next season.

Clark's days at Houston are numbered. Sorry Tx. I'll be suprised if he's still in the US by the WC.

The loss hurts b/c it really puts us in a hole but if we play as well as we did in the 1st half I think we could advance. Hopefully Brasil will lose to Italy.

Rossi, well we always have trouble with smaller pacy players and we were tired. Wish we was here though, he's the kind of player we need.

Yes they have actually.

But I agree we aren't up to the world stage just yet with exciting players on the cusp of first team action. But I will say The US did a lot better than I imagined. Funny how a US born Italian did the business against us.

Gotta say USA have progressed alot in recent years, quite a few exciting talents coming through and the MLS is slowly building in terms of quality

For being such a "young" football nation they are very good. I know they have played football for a longer while, but it wasn't until the WC 1994 they really started to promote it. So in 15 years they have reached their current situation. Give them 15-20 more years and they might very well be one of the very best teams.

Many forget they reached the quarterfinals just like England in the 2002 World Cup in Korea. On the way beating Portugal 2-1 the tournament favorites and only losing to Germany 1-0 scored by a certain Chelski player named Michael Ballack.

tbh this is probably the best i've seen the US national team play, though we did kinda turn off for a while.

i don't think Onyewu is very good at all, i'd say spectre and bornstein are probably better. The red card was definitely not warranted, he couldn't have complained about a booking, but to call that a straight red is absurd.

i agree donovan is overrated, i hate him but today i think he played pretty well. i'm just really really pissed that an american scored the two goals that made the difference (and celebrated both goals enthusiastically), and i think were it not for the sending off, the game could have been very different.

I watched the 2nd half last night. No chance for Howard on the first - a rocket. Blinded by Onyewu on the 2nd and when you let Pirlo run free into the box, goals are to be expected.

I would prefer to see someone else in the captain's armband - possibly Dempsey. What he may lack in skill, he makes up for in scrap. The US aren't going to outskill anyone so maybe a little more toughness is necessary...

Still hopefully how ever the Confederations Cup turns out, it will help the US for WC 2010 in experience. For the MLS players who are consistently playing against "B" and "C" level talent, it can only help to learn from the "A" talent when they're pushing you around the pitch.

I was impressed by USA, I liked Bradley some good aggressive runs, and Donovan played quite well. Pity about the two poor finishes in the first half, it could have really been great if they had gone in. Altidore doesn't look like he has the first touch to really play well up front.

First time we ever played them.

In our first ever world cup.

1950.

Beat us 1-0.

Our newspapers thought it was a misprint and reported that we won 10-1

imo dempsey isn't ready to captain our side, in all fairness i think howard should, though he hasn't been amazing for the national side i think he's probably one of the US's most valuable players. I would say bradley should captain, but it'd look a bit too much like favoritism if daddy made his son captain.
