Met a lovely couple who'd moved over to Spain a little over a year ago. Health issues (they're in their 70s) and the subsequent costs have basically forced them to move back to the States where they do have medicare cover.

They'd been living in Wilmington, NC but are now headed to Ashville on the other side of the state. Looks a beautiful area.

Gutted for them because they really had taken to life in Spain. had made some ex-pat friends and got on well with everyone.

Will miss them and if I ever get the money together to visit America, Asville, North Carolina will be on my list.

Asheville is a real gem situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge mountains. Vibrant arts scene and iirc the Cathedral has these incredible Tiffany stained-glass windows

These two cities are great examples of the diversity of climate and terrain in NC.

I think I've already had this conversation, but West Virginia isn't the Deep South, technically not Southern.

WV is Appalachian.
I'm not sure what WV is other than 'scary'. It's certainly not Deep South. SW Virginia feels like Deep South if you haven't spent time there, but it isn't. Ditto the adjoining regions of North Carolina.

This is decent. I personally wouldn't include Texas nor that much of Arkansas in the Deep South, but I can see the arguments for it.

....and interestingly the 'John Brown's body' business all happened (near where I live) in the WV town of Harpers Ferry. The old armory is still there where he 'holed up' and gave rifles to black men which was at the time illegal.
Harpers Ferry is a great little town. Beautiful area. Happened to be there the day of the US-England match in the 2010 WC

Two of my kids went to college not far from Asheville and another one in Wilmington. Asheville is really nice and very scenic but perhaps a bit 'druggy' for retirees (:-)) - I think Boone NC is actually nicer than Asheville but has way fewer amenities. They are both in the high country with summers more like the uk due to altitude. Wilmington is a beach town and we've been thinking of retiring to the outskirts but the hurricanes make us a bit leary. We all lived just south of Charlotte for about 5 years and NC has so much to offer Though it does have vast stretches of flat Trumpland outside the cities.

yeah! problem is that outside Harpers Ferry and Shepherdstown the panhandle of WV is pretty poor whitetrashy. Incidentally when WV seceded from VA as per the earlier posts the pan handle of WV was created because Virginia wanted to hold on to the town of Winchester which is probably the biggest town in the Shenandoah Valley.
