lol lol lol Either that, or he's still FB friends with 'Suntan Bob' Elstone and he hit him up for some the prime suntan parlous around.

I think it`s just generally a Scottish thing, as both of my Scottish mates, have exactly the same pallor and they`re both dark haired.

I remember going to Ibiza years ago with one of them and despite giving himself sunstroke through sunbathing too long, he only managed to turn himself from deathly white, to deathly red over the course of a week lol

Good old Moyes already talking himself out of top 4.

He's right though. How the hell He's got that squad to where he has I don't know. Still a very good manager.

Newbie alert: I don't know if this belongs here (spare me the barbs if it doesn't :P ), but I am surprised by the bile I see in a lot of posts when Moyes is mentioned. He may not be a world beater, but he is a damn good manager.

Personally, I came across Football, Everton and Moyes back in 2004, when Rooney left for ManU. Down here in India, football is not a thing, but Rooney saga made newspapers, and I was intrigued. I looked up the names mentioned in the article and I was hooked. Have been following Everton since (And endure barbs of all other glory hunters). During early days, there was no way I could watch Everton play, as none of the channels carried it. I read everything about Everton that I could lay my hands on. Everton and Moyes made me fall in love with football, so much so that I abandoned following cricket, which is kinda religion here.

I understand, when people complain we did not win anything while he was here. He did give us stability and solidity though. It's my personal opinion, that Martinez's amazing run was largely down to his systems and instilled discipline in the defensive side. Once that was gone, we know what followed. Moyes had a system and it worked, we did not have to worry about beating teams around or below us. Big 6, yes he is too defensive, afraid even.

Would I want him back at Everton? no. I think his time has passed (at least with us), but that does not make him my enemy. Yes, he might have tried to do shady things when he left, but then I can look beyond that and see the excellent job that he did with us and applaud him for it.

So, I am really happy to see him do well at West Ham. Whenever we are not playing, I do peek over at what's happening down there. I followed his career down at Sociedad and the pits of Sunderland as well. I do admire the sheer down-to-earth feel I get from him (I wouldn't know the ground realities, but that's what my impression of the guy is).

I guess, enough for first post.

I think it is a combination of his lack of ambition at Everton (his constant talking us down) and his attitude towards us when he went to utd.

He is a good manager, but let's not get carried away, he is not a top manager.

I don't think talking us down could be perceived as lack of ambition, I view it more as managing expectation. Remember Ranieri when Leicester won the league. He kept on saying that he was targeting 40 points only, not thinking of league positions. Then kept on inching upwards as the targets were met.

I do agree that his attitude towards us when he left could turn some away from him. One of the missteps of the time I guess. Biggest misstep-he got suckered by Sir Alex into accepting the poisoned chalice, but who would turn it down :D

So long as he does not merge attacking intent with his excellent defensive structure, he cannot and will not be perceived as a top manager, I am with you on this.

But.... He seems to be willing to learn (albeit a little late), his West Ham team seems to be doing a fair bit of attacking as well. This is based on what I can gauge sitting here, please correct me if that is not true.

His West Ham team are surprisingly lethal. They have been scoring all sorts of goals. They have also become solid since Craig Dawson came in at the back.

How is Moyes always able to get decent defenders to play like world class centre halves?

I believe, he is a disciplinarian and doesn't suffer fools. Plus, he has a pretty rigid structure. To an extent he also has a map of how he wants the team to fly. He also demands adherence to his plans. It's his way or highway, as Haller, Anderson, Yarmolenko (I think) are finding out at West Ham. Everyone in the system, know their roles and there's no playing-out-of-the-back-even-when-you-are-[Poor language removed]-at-it nonsense when Moyes is around. :P You don't have to be world class to earn your spot, just do your things tidily and you will prosper. Dawson is the latest example. From what I am hearing on WHU boards, they are also impressed by the improvements in Ogbonna / Diop this season.

Even with us, he had pretty solid defensive units across the years: Hibbert / Neville / Coleman at RB, Yobo / Jagielka / Distin / Heitinga / Lescott at CB and Baines (I don't remember anyone else) at LB, none of them world class defenders individually but as a unit you will be hard pressed to find a better/ cohesive defense. If I remember correctly, Stones was also his last acquisition before he left for ManU. So yeah, he understands how to maximize the qualities of whoever he can afford.

That's why I think he IS a good manager who improves the players / system he gets, and not buy the best out there. Of course, he was super defensive while with us, but based on how his West Ham are flying, I suspect it was more to do with Kenwright's shallow pockets rather than his desire and this is not meant as a dig at Kenwright.

Respect....

Love it.
You think he has a top four squad? Should he be telling everyone that top four is certainty and the squad take the foot off the gas get the cigars out.
It’s a message to the the team that they need to carry on following the system and working hard.
Pretty sure if he said he was aiming for top four and then finished 6th there would be people on here beating him for that

Of course they don’t. But you do remember Moyes when he was here don’t you? All the knife to a gunfight and plucky little Everton rhetoric. He got us close but bottled it every time. Wasn’t that long ago mate.

Unless you still got a little stiffy for him and that why your a little upset.

This. I think a lot of us appreciated what he did and didn't begrudge him going. Others welcomed the change. I liked him, but could see he'd hit a ceiling here. So was keen to see what a new broom would bring.

However it soon became apparent he'd agreed a deal earlier than indicated, thus doing us out of compensation. Then all the snide comments around the Fellaini and Baines bids. Rankled a bit.

Now, I'm over it. I think he's done great at West Ham.
