2024/25 David Moyes

I don't like the 'Idea' of Moyes, but I can get behind him in the short term...I even got behind Benitez in the short term - while he was doing 'OK' early on, but deep down I knew he was shiiz (and what's more - a rs shiiz) with his obsession about Zonal Marking to name but one.

Moyes (and Benitez) - the longer he's here, the more he will have opportunity to revert to his old ways.

Hopefully he'll be too busy trying to win the odd game out of the next 19 to concentrate on not losing, or even worse - not losing by too much.

Deep down, I hope this 2.5 year deal is a mere fig leaf that;
A) gives him some authority with players, both present and incoming.
B) allows him to take a pay-off in June so TFG can get somebody decent in...but in reality I think we're stuck with Moyes.

So as a.ways, I'll get behind the team (despite Moyes) as we take it one game at a time.

A Leopard reputedly can't change its shorts - nor will Moyes, Damascean conversions not withstanding - most people don't change, they just become more so.

Under pressure they always revert to their default.

On the field, under pressure, natural passers will always pass, natural shooters will always shoot, natural dribblers will always dribble, head down merchants will always run in to blind alleys.

Don't get me wrong Moyes (used to) has his good points (and Dyche had done his dash...more or less said so himself)

But Moyes will always revert to being Moyes and the longer he's here the more he will revert - can't help himself.

*awaits headline- Moyes in cheeky bid for...'fill in a former Moyes player here.'

But In the manner of fickle fans everywhere - He wins the next 2 Home games and I won't hear a word against him.

Your last game (and tenure) is now history - (Clean Slate City Arizona)

You're only as good as your NEXT game!

I think he'll get us clear. Then again I think Dyche would have too.

It's an unnecessary destabilisation.

Dyche proved could he do the job but TFG panicked. Now they dont get to make the transition to a new manager with vision and a lot of ambition - they snookered themselves for years with Moyes taking their cash for treading water.

On the success stuff: for a club like Everton the only metric of that is silverware IMO. Other clubs might have a different yardstick, but we shouldn't be dumbing it down. And I dont think many do, tbh. Ild say the vast majority of Everton fans dont consider anything since 1995 as 'success'.
I agree that most of us don't, Dave; the question is whether that's rational. There's no doubt that, historically, Everton is one of the most successful clubs ever. But context matters. The single best predictor of success is wage bill. The second is squad value. By those measures, for the last 30 years or more - a whole generation - Everton are highly unlikely to win anything. In fact, no team other than City, Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal or the RS are likely to win anything. And they almost never do. Setting the bar for success at winning something without regard to those metrics is not rational. I totally get it, but it's not rational.

A rational measure of success is out-performing the statistical indicators. We haven't done that since 2014. We did do it regularly under Moyes. Brighton do it regularly. Fulham are doing it. Bournemouth are doing it. Villa did it last year. Forest are doing it this year. None of them have won a trophy. They probably won't this year either. The whole thing is stitched up and the richest clubs win everything.

Beating up on Everton because they don't win anything is foolish. We know there's been mismanagement since 2017: money has been spaffed away and the team has badly underperformed, but we still can't compete financially with the top 6/7. No manager can be expected to come in and win a trophy in those circumstances. It's not fair to expect them to.

We have potential because of our history and our fanbase in the city. That's all we have at the moment and the owners' and manager's only real responsibility is to realise that potential over the next ten years or so.

During the Moyes years I think a lot of us wondered how he would do with a real transfer budget. I know I did.

His tenure at Manure with that sort of budget was not good, but I believe he was never meant to succeed there. Plus a lot of good managers have struggled there since that time.

I’m behind him and I’m optimistic for the first time in several years.

For me, success is always based on realistic ambitions. And for Everton this shouldn't be relegation battle, ideally it should be Europe qualifications. We won't ever have the financial possibilities of Man City, Chelsea, Man United, Arsenal to name a few. Aston Villa and Newcastle managed to be under the top 4 one season, so why can't we achieve that.

The conference league gave the chance that teams like Roma, Fiorentina, West Ham, Olympiakos, Feyenoord that are by far no names can win titles outside of Europe, but won't have to win the CL. The last underdog that really won it was Porto imo, and that was in 2004.
The word 'ideally' is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Yes, ideally it should. But realistically, we don't have the resources to compete at that level right now. We all know we've wasted shed loads since 2017, but that's where we are. We have at least built a new stadium. We are the only club with negative spend on the squad. We have no money to strengthen the squad, which is limited. If we spend money we don't have, we get points deducted and relegated. If other teams have better players, how can we qualify for Europe?

He made mistakes - not least getting rid of the backroom team - but the senior players there never gave him a chance. That club is rotten.

Rather Moyes than Benitez!

If he can keep this squad in the Premier League, he will attain legendary status on the blue half of Liverpool. The most frightening thing about this season is that our players have actually given us maximum effort.
If they have, then Dyche really does have a lot to answer for. They have been absolutely dire. Maybe it's effort. Maybe it's ability. Maybe it's coaching and tactics. We'll see!

Fair play to you Dave, I admire the way you always support the Everton manager.

You seemed to class 72 points as success.
