2024/25 David Moyes

Hi Lads.....60 year Hammer here...

Just wanted to pass on a few points on David Moyes.....no particular order but genuine feeling nonetheless.

Two January signings changed everything for his tenure at West Ham, Bowen and Soucek, they both arrived and really we never looked back. Without them I'm not sure where we would have gone. He built the team on these two. And with Declan Rice arriving into the team we had very solid foundations.
Antonio was key to everything we did. Without him we could never have played some fantastic "break" football...some of the best football I've seen at West Ham......it wasn't the beautiful build up play but just as exciting, if not more. ..We broke with such speed and precision.....not long ball, but with a minimal number of passes from back to front. Antonio ran the channels and Bowen finished the moves...mostly. In this period it was fantastic.....but possession was very low in most matches.....I didn't care. It was great to watch.

The downfall in his time at West Ham arrived when the breakaway football began to falter. Basically, we gave up ALL possession but didn't counter attack quite so well. So eventually we just got pinned back game after game, just defending our goal. This eventually became untenable........and last season we conceded an enormous amount of goals.....the most in our PL history I believe. .....Just to counter that, we still scored 60 goals last season......and finished ninth but we took some enormous beatings in the last 6 months of his tenure. And the defence, the hallmark of a Moyes team was a pathetic unit.

I never tell other fans of teams to "be careful what you wish for"........fans generally know their club. Outsiders and media types do not. We chose badly in our next manager choice......nobody much would have swapped Moyes for Lopetegui........to let Moyes depart, on good terms, was correct.....our choice was something no-one wanted. Hopefully now we have someone decent......so I've no problem with who Everton want..or wish for as manager....you know your club.

To summarise......I and most of (we) love and respect what Moyes did. And some of the football at times was fantastic to watch.......one moment we are on the edge of our own box.....and 4 direct and clinical passes later we'd score. ...You now that buzz of breakaway goals....

So, I look on with great respect for how he goes when back home at Everton. He did wonders for us....we had some very quick fast players. That worked for us. It was time for him to go in the end.......all managers have a shelf life. But normally only real fans can recognise it......journalists do not.

I still think he can rejuvenate another team. Given time. And clever new signings will be important.....I wish you all the best. David Moyes has a place in our hearts. And would love to see him build the foundations for a better Everton........sorry if it's a bit long......hope you haven't dropped off to sleep.

Cheers lads, Up the Toffees.
Met some Irons fans on Holiday and they raved about Moyes early doors. I said he will make you a good team but not great. He will frustrate the hell out of you as you will see you will be only a couple of players away from being a very good team........but it won't happen. Moyes to me has a level, he can make you good but that is as far as he will take you. I would snap anyones hands off for that for a few seasons now

It’s just my opinion ,but one shared by many other Evertonians.
The Liverpool game didn’t just hinge on Distin’s poor back pass for instance, it was our inability to impose ourselves on the game, a game that for once we were the form side and expected to win .
Ultimately though you think Moyes is a good manager , whereas I don’t.
There is a certain amount of rose tinted glasses viewing Moyes’ performance first time round currently.
But then I’m old enough and lucky enough to remember a time before Moyes when we actually played good football, challenged for titles and won cups , so perhaps my standards and expectations are higher than others who rate Moyes so highly .
There's no rose tinted glasses. It's just adding up how much we spent compared to other teams during Moyes' tenure compared to other teams and our league positions before and after Moyes tenure. The facts are indisputable except to the deluded ungrateful few who expect miracles. It's got nothing to do with standards or expectations either. Everyone wants Everton to win trophies but we're not all deluded.

Like a teen again. Soaking up all the media. I checked out with all that extra stuff long long ago. Was barley arsed with pressers the last couple years.

Will be paying attention now. I won't be getting up in the morning to watch soccer AM hoping to get a few minutes of something everton related but I'm back baby.
Sounds uncomfortable.

It's not rose tinted glasses. There's a massive revenue & economic disparity between a few clubs and every other club. Trying to bridge that gap is extremely difficult because if you dare to get near to gatecrashing their party your better players still get constantly picked off with better contract offers Everton couldn't match.

Youre portraying it like the manager was the bottleneck. Far from it. Moyes surely would have won stuff with that team if he only had got financial backing to compete. We had a great first 15 but no strength in depth and big holes in certain positions.
Man U squad was worth way more so you can say he was financially backed.
What did he win - a community shield in his first match v Wigan.
Yes agree Everton had a great squad, just needed a great coach and a couple of signings.
Of course its hard to seperate all this from Kenwright. Moyes fit him like a glove back then.
I do think though Moyes is a bit of a different species these days, sure we'll see

I trump that with a midfielder called Elliott (possibly Ian and possibly a Kiwi) playing for Fulham at GP around 12-15 yrs ago. Truly an horrendous performance that suggested it was the very first time he’d even seen a football.

I remember him, ran around like the tin man from Wizard of Oz.

Was in the Main Stand that match, first few mins everyone found it hilarious and then just felt bad for the guy.

Well my point is replacing Moyes in that equation with someone else who is just as good or better on paper would not have the same effect irl as it would on paper - and him replacing Ferguson at utd proves this, too.

Firstly, i dont really believe a manager makes THAT big a difference as we would like to believe. What both teams had at that point was a long term instilled culture, reliable back room staff, proud fans and a club that pulled together all the way from the groundsman to the manager.

Sounds like a damn LinkedIn post this, suddenly, but these things go a long way to make players believe and achieve and make an effort. "Gravitas" like this in football, like proper prestige, doesnt come for free and arguably Moyes had more prestige with him joining us now than he had last time.

I'm not really talking about how happy they should be with the appointment or the volume of content produced, just the focus on him being some sort of returning hero. Posting stuff like 'the story continues' is a bit weird for me for someone like Moyes coming back, i'm just surprised they're running with that angle so much rather than him just being a decent appointment in his own right.
The story continues is also linked to the new stadium, more adverts in town saying we will continue this story with pictures of the new ground and fans
