2024/25 David Moyes

The same lack of finances that didn't prevent Martinez playing far better, more exciting football with almost the same side a year afterwards? Moyes is a better manager than Martinez, but he hasn't an ounce of the fantasy. He limits himself.
Martinez lucked out on two loan signings. Give Moyes those players and we would have been challenging for the championship that year.

Martinez's single masterstroke was Lukaku.
Everton weren't going great at start of season until he arrived on deadline day with 3 draws (two 0-0s) plus Stevenage taking us to ET in LC.
His subsequent forward signings were poor.
And he actually wanted Demba Ba. Imagine if Moyes had Lukaku. We would have cracked the top 4 every year without doubt.

Hi Lads.....60 year Hammer here...

Just wanted to pass on a few points on David Moyes.....no particular order but genuine feeling nonetheless.

Two January signings changed everything for his tenure at West Ham, Bowen and Soucek, they both arrived and really we never looked back. Without them I'm not sure where we would have gone. He built the team on these two. And with Declan Rice arriving into the team we had very solid foundations.
Antonio was key to everything we did. Without him we could never have played some fantastic "break" football...some of the best football I've seen at West Ham......it wasn't the beautiful build up play but just as exciting, if not more. ..We broke with such speed and precision.....not long ball, but with a minimal number of passes from back to front. Antonio ran the channels and Bowen finished the moves...mostly. In this period it was fantastic.....but possession was very low in most matches.....I didn't care. It was great to watch.

The downfall in his time at West Ham arrived when the breakaway football began to falter. Basically, we gave up ALL possession but didn't counter attack quite so well. So eventually we just got pinned back game after game, just defending our goal. This eventually became untenable........and last season we conceded an enormous amount of goals.....the most in our PL history I believe. .....Just to counter that, we still scored 60 goals last season......and finished ninth but we took some enormous beatings in the last 6 months of his tenure. And the defence, the hallmark of a Moyes team was a pathetic unit.

I never tell other fans of teams to "be careful what you wish for"........fans generally know their club. Outsiders and media types do not. We chose badly in our next manager choice......nobody much would have swapped Moyes for Lopetegui........to let Moyes depart, on good terms, was correct.....our choice was something no-one wanted. Hopefully now we have someone decent......so I've no problem with who Everton want..or wish for as manager....you know your club.

To summarise......I and most of (we) love and respect what Moyes did. And some of the football at times was fantastic to watch.......one moment we are on the edge of our own box.....and 4 direct and clinical passes later we'd score. ...You now that buzz of breakaway goals....

So, I look on with great respect for how he goes when back home at Everton. He did wonders for us....we had some very quick fast players. That worked for us. It was time for him to go in the end.......all managers have a shelf life. But normally only real fans can recognise it......journalists do not.

I still think he can rejuvenate another team. Given time. And clever new signings will be important.....I wish you all the best. David Moyes has a place in our hearts. And would love to see him build the foundations for a better Everton........sorry if it's a bit long......hope you haven't dropped off to sleep.

Cheers lads, Up the Toffees.
Its funny what football is in this day and age. You summarisation his tenure when it went pear shaped was just one season.

We had Moyes for 11 years. We had one or two horror seasons. The fans kept the faith. He bought patience from us just for finishing up the table. For instance one season we finished 17th the next season we finished 4th. We never questioned him when we finished 17th. Zero sacking rumours. The idea we would sack him a year after winning a European trophy and finishing mid table with a good European run is absolutely insane. I pray we don't treat Moyes like that.

Its funny getting a lesson on our Moyes from West Ham fans is interesting.

I do appreciate your expressing your opinion. It does interest me in more than one way.

I think there might be a different attitude in players now.
When he went to Sunderland he had failed at United and Sociedad and been out of the game a short while.
This time he has been a success at W ham. Doesn't matter what the fans think, the players will all know he stabilized them and won a trophy.
Also familiarity will hopefully lead to more respect and unity.
He knows the club better than any of those players (except Coleman).

My personal thinking was that under Dyche a lot of players were unhappy.
The squad was galvanized by relegation threats and points deductions, not solely by Sean Dyche.
And when the imminent threat of relegation was gone and there was no points deductions, there was nothing to galvanize the squad and the wheels quickly came off.
I'm hoping Moyes can change this.
Yes I agree , I think Moyes is a much better manager now than those failings , just a big shame he got his trophy at West ham .

Hopefully he's got plenty left in the tank and can replicate that

Can’t agree with this .
But I think it’s subjective.
I wasn’t a great fan of Martinez but he was a far braver manager than Moyes will ever be.
Moyes is a defensive .risk averse ,manager .
There is a reason his teams always stumbled at decisive moments and games however well they had been playing beforehand.
In my opinion there is a lot of revisionism concerning the Moyes era at the moment.
He built good workmanlike teams , and for a period we held the slightly risible and spurious title of ‘best of the rest’ . But by the time he departed other teams were overtaking us with bolder more aggressive tactics.
Judging by his efficient but limited W. Ham sides I don’t think his ethos has notably evolved in his travels .
Which games are you talking about? Did Moyes make Distin do an awful back pass? Did Moyes deliberately injure our best players before the Chelsea final? This is just pure BS.

Moyes gets great credit for doing 90% of the work of building that side. But the point is: his utter lack of fantasy and bravery in big games was shown up the following season by the kamikaze ideologue Martinez - an inferior manager, but one who wasn't scared to gamble.
Martinez also shat the bed in big games. We should have beaten Liverpool at home that season and concede a last minute set price goal (wouldn't happen under Moyes). We got destroyed by them away from home and they then went on a title charge. We got hammered in the Ukraine in the Europa. We should have beaten Utd in the semi.

I always say this,He come through the United academy as well.

Easily by some distance the worst player I've ever ever EVER seen make it as a professional.
I trump that with a midfielder called Elliott (possibly Ian and possibly a Kiwi) playing for Fulham at GP around 12-15 yrs ago. Truly an horrendous performance that suggested it was the very first time he’d even seen a football.

It’s just my opinion ,but one shared by many other Evertonians.
The Liverpool game didn’t just hinge on Distin’s poor back pass for instance, it was our inability to impose ourselves on the game, a game that for once we were the form side and expected to win .
Ultimately though you think Moyes is a good manager , whereas I don’t.
There is a certain amount of rose tinted glasses viewing Moyes’ performance first time round currently.
But then I’m old enough and lucky enough to remember a time before Moyes when we actually played good football, challenged for titles and won cups , so perhaps my standards and expectations are higher than others who rate Moyes so highly .
