I think we have to disregard fees as a factor for a bit - firstly we have (supposedly) a bit of money so we'll be overcharged for a bit, and also with all the cash in the game, valuations are still not settling from the billions in cash flying about.

Look at Tim Cahill - no prem experience, but was a belter. If we'd have paid serious money for him he'd still have been a good signing.
I see the cash being spent now as deductions off the fee likely already agreed for Lukaku. Pickford + Klaassen = circa £57M. Subtract that from, say, £80M for Lukaku.

We'll get a few quid more to play with if we sell all those deemed surplus to requirements, especially if Barkley leaves. But we have to count the pennies. We will have a very low net spend, IMO.

Of course. But the fee then becomes the issue. By all means grab players from smaller leagues and lower divisions, but dont get ripped off in the process.

The boy is worth 26m David, you know why, cos thats what he will cost.

The old Ev would have walked away when it got above 15m, but this new Ev, it goes hard asf Dave.

Do you like it hard David?

From an article in November 2014, when Klaassen was 21:

Comfortable with both feet on the ball and blessed with great speed of thought and action, Klaassen has had a fan in Johan Cruijff for a long time now. The greatest Dutch footballer of all time personally suggested a specialist doctor in Barcelona for Klaassen – then with just a handful of Ajax senior appearances to his name – to consult on his almost-career-threatening groin injury. The Ajax legend even visited Klaassen in person to check up and see how he was doing in what was a surreal moment for Klaassen.

Recently, also having taken notice of the Hilversum-born youngster’s unbelievable growth curve as a midfielder, Cruijff declared in his weekly column for De Telegraaf that Klaassen can be compared with Xavi and Toni Kroos in terms of how comfortable they are on the ball and suggested that Klaassen – once a support striker and used as centre forward for the Dutch U21s – be used as a ‘controlling’ midfielder deepest among the trio for Ajax. Cruijff noted that, with Klaassen’s ability to retain the ball and great passing, the speed of Ajax’s game would be largely increased. However, De Boer’s opinion is that he has more qualities and depth to add and they would be curtailed in a deeper position. He has a great – previously mentioned – awareness of goal and offers a threat in attack. He is best suited to the role he already plays in and could truly flourish in a time where a ‘complete’ player is absolutely precious, especially for a team such as Ajax.

What if I told you this David, our net spend will be very low, you know why, you say we have "spent" circa 57m, but thats not true, we will pay the fees over a number of years, so currently we have spent around 15m or so, but heres the kicker, we are still paying for Bolaise and we are still getting fees in for players we have sold, so I wish you luck finding our net spend!

Its inevitable when we sell such a high value asset, maybe 2 if we think Barkley can still demand a price. Unless we buy players who are in or want CL football (therefore demanding massive fee and wages) it would require up to 5 players to make up that inflow.

We are in a position where I feel we need heads more than ever (quality of course). So we can expect at least 4-5 quality players in the £30m range with a bargain maybe in there (Sandro). That would leave us square if we get everyone we after. No issue with that. If we throw in a surprise £50m player.. that changes the stakes.

Already been pointed out but we got Cahill from milwall, pienaar couldn't get a game in Germany, Coleman came from Sligo, and Lukaku originally came from the Belgian league.

Give the lad a chance

Guess most fans will be happy about this except 1 or 2.

We used to sign doss like McGeady and Niasse and some moans we are signing the Ajax captain?? How's thing changes. Thank you Moshiri.

We don't spend big bucks - "Nothing has changed, Moshiri's a fraud, Billy Liars biscuit tin mentality is destroying the club. Small club mentality, we need to spend a decent wedge to get anywhere"

We splash a decent wedge on the captain of the Europa League finalists - "Dutch league is jarg. Waste of money. I know more abar the merits of Ajax, their structure and the Eredivisie after a 10 mins Wikipedia sesh than all the rest of yers and Everton are making a balls of everything again"

From this video, you can see his influence in matches. First-touch, passing, and two-footedness are superb, especially for a 22 year-old at the time. We have midfielders like Gueye, McCarthy and Schneiderlin and Barry and Besic who only really contribute defensively, or Barkley who only contributes offensively. Klaassen will do both.
