Confirmed Signing Demarai Gray

I really want to see Gray fill his potential, he could be a good signing if we can get the best out of him.
I doubt we will. He is one of those infuriating players. Talented but unable to use it consistently.

At £1.5m he is good cover though and will help out covering for Richarlison while he is away.

Also if Brands was signing a
19 year old Gray for £1.5 million the fut hipsters would be rejoicing to the Gods that we have a youngun going into the under 23's to be transformed into a superstar by "Unsy" when in reality 9/10 young signings never end up making the grade.
That's a strange take, he's not 19, has had 5 years in the Prem with Leicester, he's not some unknown quantity, everyone would be behind a 19 year old until he struggles to settle then he'll be mugged off as useless, it's what we do.

again only good shrewd business if they produce on the pitch, the only way to deem value in a player is against how they perform on the pitch. If we paid a£100m for someone who wins us the league title, then that's good value, if we pay sod all and the player barely gets a game or does nothing on the pitch, it's bad value because wages still cost. Cheap still need to deliver.
But not to the same extent.

It’s a risk based calculation. If he fails it’s not the end of the world, but he could flourish and save us a bundle. If a £100m player fails it breaks the club.

Yes but a cheap punt is less likely to help you win anything, we are trading quality(lol) for quantity and it won't end well.

Sometimes you need a different manager.

It's happened loads where players have reacted well with a manager, and played their best stuff, then when they move on, they're not the same player.

By all means, I don't think we're signing a superstar, but if Benitez can find a way to get him consistent, having only just turned 25, it's a good signing. He can't be worse than Bernard, surely?

But we can’t always spend big, and to be honest our recent record with big signings has been patchy at best. Money doesn’t guarantee quality.
I understand that, but why are we always talking extremes, there's a multitude of players out there between cheap and ridiculously expensive. To be honest the type of signings I thought Brands would be making, smart buys that will improve and we improve or sell for a hefty profit. We currently seem to be scrambling in the dark.

Besic, Bolasie and Walcott's contracts finished at the end of last season.

Olsen and King's loan spells have also ended.
Besic and Bolasie weren't named in our 25 man squad, we had 2 GKs on the bench ahead of them by choice, Walcott was out on loan. Nobody is replacing them because they weren't here as part of the playing squad.

Begovic is here in place of Olsen, I'll give you that. That is a downgrade.

Who knows what the King situation was, that was especially weird, even for Everton.

But the reality is mate even punts cost big money.

Soucek cost WHU £15 million from some farmers league

Godfrey a championship player with potential cost us £25 million

Behrama cost WHU £25 million

We simply haven't the FFP wiggle room at present to be spending those fees on players who'll be spending much of their time on our bench.

I’m hoping it’s because we are sorting out a bit of depth quite cheaply and will spend some money on a longer term right back and a winger. The lack of options from the bench was staggering at times last season. There were many games when we couldn’t name a full bench. We didn't have the players to change our style.

I still think we will sign some of those type of players in the 20 - 24 year old bracket like Godfrey / Digne.

The days are gone for me where you can pick up players like Lescott, Baines, Jags, Cahill for £2-£5 million punts.

They would all be touted at £15-20 million minimum now.
