Discussion & help on depression & mental health related issues

The person that never made a mistake never made anything.

It is human to have regret, it is normal to think 'what if', dwelling on that sorrow affects your happiness today, in that is a choice, we are a product of our choices and memories but we don't have to wear them to our detriment. If something is haunting you, counselling is definitely an option, sometimes sharing a burden with effectively a complete stranger can be very freeing, it lends perspective and in some part some finality.
The trade is you have to go and be honest, and vulnerable, and want to address the issue(s) to then get/feel better.
That last sentence is one to consider in full if you are going for some therapy.

Anyone else have trouble with focussing on past mistakes?

No matter how many years ago and when you haven't thought about them in years. Found myself doing it recently and then just wallowing in self pity which then makes you feel worse.

So frustrating.

I find myself doing this, when I`m drifting off the sleep.

It can be quite unsettling and often it can lead to bad dreams too.

I`m now expert, but I`m guessing it`s something to do with the subconscious ?

I get around it, by having the radio on so low, that you can barely hear it and that seems to focus my brain on the radio, rather than the intrusive thoughts and I drop off to sleep pretty quickly.

That's exactly it I think.

Fwiw I have decided to give therapy/counselling a go as I can't complain I'm not feeling okay and not seek to do all I can to combat it

COYB are you able to elaborate on your intrusive thoughts. You appear to want to " lock them away ", are they really unpleasant?

They`re only unpleasant, in that it`s stuff that you`d rather not think about and in the main had forgotten about.

Nothing really bad, just stuff that you`ve done and said in the past, that you`d change if you could turn the clock back.

It`s a really weird one, as these thoughts only seem to come just before sleep.

They`re also more prevalent if I go to bed with things on my mind.

The radio on low, definitely helps though.

" You'd change if you could...", This. We all have them, all of us. It's a good character trait because your reflecting on what could have been, what you would have done differently. Especially if you've hurt someone. Your admonishing yourself. If you didn't think and reflect on your actions, I'd be a little concerned. Do you REALLY want to get to a point in your life where you don't even think about what you've done. You don't care.

Whilst it can be damaging to continuously " beat ourselves up " - figuratively speaking - we all need to have checks and balances. I try to learn from my past, not always successfully, but I hope I can use it as a learning curve. It's a perfectly natural thing to do, to reminisce and reflect, but be mindfull of not fixating on them.
