Discussion & help on depression & mental health related issues

Has anyone else ever had issues with suck ups in work? I’ve been in my job for a year and a half now and was progressing nicely, getting good comments in my appraisals 1-1s etc. However about 5 months ago a new guy joined and has kissed the backside of our manager so much it’s insufferable. The manager seems to love it though and is really pally with him, he even got a promotion after just four weeks! It’s really affecting my confidence and development unfortunately. Am I silly for letting it bother me so much or should I bring it up with a more senior manager?

If you think this is going to affect your future promotion, look for another job, or meet your boss and tell him how you feel to his face. I got sacked as a contractor 3 weeks ago and company owes me 3 months pay so I have to look for new things now. Several other people had been hired after me and I felt I was being taken for granted. If you don't feel as welcome somewhere anymore, look for other things. However, if u need money badly suck it up and keep your head down but don't expect much. It's amazing how all companies are the same in the end with the problematic people dynamics, a real shame but good luck

Apperciate it! Long road ahead, still don't know the pathology but dreading the worst based on the size of the tumor and the symptoms. Just trying to take it one day at a time

Unfortunately we just got back from the oncologist and it's stage 4 :( back in her lungs again. Going to have chemo and immunotherapy to try and control/management it but it's not curable. Oncologist said the average prognosis 18 months but she has patients who last longer (and less).

I am so sorry to hear this. Immunotherapy seems to be the new kid on the block and it appears to be doing great things. Sending you love and hope that they can control it in as pain free a manner as possible x

FWIW mate my dad has got Mesothelioma (Terminal Lung cancer) caused by asbestos exposure, and in April 2022 they gave him 8-12 months to live, he is still here today and hasn't deteriorated a jot since his diagnosis.

Keep the faith and keep believing! xx

Sorry to hear about your mum.

I lost mine to stage four brain cancer a while back myself.

They’ll be good days and bad days.

Make the most of the good days. They’ll be cherished memories down the road.

Try your best to not let it consume you as hard as it can be. Your mum will want you to be there for her but also want you to keep enjoying life where you can. Don’t feel guilty if you need some time to yourself.

As others have said, keep the faith and keep believing, they continue to do amazing things in medicine.

If your Dad developed this horrible disease as a consequence of his past employment - 98% of cases are due to this - then I sincerely hope you are looking into compensation. There are several top UK law firms (presuming you are UK based) who specialise in this and will assist your family at this dreadful time to achieve rightful reparation.

I know money isn't at the forefront of your mind but so much can be done to give both your Dad and his family some solace that his suffering will not go unanswered. I used to work in this area and the financial compensation attaching to asbestos-related disease is not to be sniffed at. And it's not just about money but the legal specialists can also assist in so many other ways to help alleviate the hardships associated with care, palliative treatment and so on.

God bless

Thanks, Yes mate this is ongoing and it can be a significant pay out, i believe up to £140,000.

I think he started this claim about 12-18 months ago, he had to give all his work history and Employers names to the solicitor or someone who is dealing with it.

So sorry to hear this, I do so hope the treatment will allow you to have much more time with your Mum. Keep believing that it will and cherish the time you have. Best wishes.💙
