Discussion & help on depression & mental health related issues

Forgive me if this is stuff already posted / known to folks, but I thought it might be useful info for people trying to navigate NHS mental health services (esp those considering obtaining help).

Most people will got to their GP which can be a lottery. The NHS have rolled out the improving access to psychological therapies (IAPT) service across England which is essentially the first port of call for an assessment. In some cases you can self refer to IAPT and cut out your GP. I say in some cases because it does vary depending on the local NHS trust or clinical commissioning group (CCG). You can find out more about IAPT and how to find your local service and referral info here:

http://www.iapt.nhs.uk/

I hope this is helpful to someone, sometimes knowing what you can ask for / the likely process is helpful esp. when consulting GPs.
I'm lucky, my GP is good but others aren't so lucky.

Hi. I briefly posted a while back concerning my significant other coping with depression and anxiety. It was really affecting how I am going through my day to day.
..but now there is more.

I feel like my love is now self medicating using opioids. I found a 30 day supply of vicodin (90 pills). It was prescribed on Friday. on saturday 37 were gone. There are none today.

something has gotta break and I dont want it to be me first. Has anyone dealt with this kind of addiction and is there anything I can do to help her get to the right treatment?

Keep it mind our healthcare systems are different but I will assume there are basics which I can start from.

Hi mate. I'm not an expert, but to take 37 tablets of any type of pain killing medication over a 24 hr period has to be very very dangerous and then the rest over a 4 day period.

I'm only thinking out loud here, but are you sure she isn't getting " high " on them or even selling them, as to take that many in such a short space of time would turn her into a zombie - which I'm sure you would've noticed ?

Is this the stuff that is known as " Hillbilly Heroin " in the States ?

Have a look at these three forums that deal with specific types of drug abuse :

Drugs Forum

Recovery.org

Pysch forum

These websites definitely have threads relating to Vicodin abuse and addiction.

I've also tagged in @RAFUH, as she has a proffesional knowledge of prescription medication and may be able to advise you as a proffesional rather than a lay person like me.

Hope this helps in starting the ball rolling mate ?

Vicodin contains hydrocodone (opioid) and acetaminophen/paracetamol . 90 tablets in 2 days is a massive acetaminophen dose (close to 30 grams and 4 grams daily is the maximum) and would be toxic to the liver. If she is not feeling sick/appearing sick at this point, it is unlikely she took them all. However, if she has any nausea, vomiting and/or abdominal pain, get her to the emergency room and make sure the physicians know about the Vicodin. Even if she is feeling okay, if you find out she has taken them, she should be seen by a physician regardless.

Consider talking to her physician or your own as they should be able to assist you with treatment options or referral to a counselor/mental health professional.

You local health department would also know of area treatment options.

There may be Narcotics Anonymous (NA) http://www.na.org/ meetings in your area. Anyone can attend open meetings and you may also find the associated group for family members. As well as someone at the meetings should know about services in your area.

edit: I have used she through this....apologies if that is a poor assumption on my part

Just to add to this folks, if you have, or think someone has, overdosed on anything (including household meds such as paracetamol), get them to the nearest A&E ASAP. Time is of the essence in such cases and delay can be fatal.
