Do we really have £100 million to spend?

The claim that we have a £100 million summer transfer budget first emerged a couple of days after Moshiri invested. Now, with one week to season kickoff, we’re short of that spend by around £92m. So what’s the story? Here’s one possibility.
Moshiri, like many successful people, is a good salesman. He needed to convince a protective BK and a reluctant RK so he exaggerated the transfer kitty. He principally envisions a player trading model so targeted Koeman and Monchi who are both highly experienced in that. He will provide funds but it will be in line with his reputed wealth of £1.3 billion which puts him around mid-table in the owner’s league.
So how would he explain a much lower spend than expected? Simple. Make enquiries / offers for unobtainable expensive stars while negotiating hard for lower level ones expecting to land at least one marquee and some budget players before deadline. ‘We tried very hard but don’t yet have the status to land these stars,’ would follow. With RK’s neck on the chopping block I expect he’ll push hard to spend most of what’s there. It has to be noted that we do lack pulling power but this can be ameliorated by providing substantial financial incentive i.e. signing RK himself.
I hope this isn’t true, and we won’t have a real idea until September, but if it is true I’d expect the following.

Publicity: Interest in top stars i.e. Draxler
Net Spend: Less than £40m
Signings: No Carvalho, Koulibaly or Draxler
Marquees: One (Witsel or Mata)
Maybe 2 if Stones goes
If Stones + Lu go a low, or negative, spend
Aftermath: Failed bids for big names leaked

Even if this is the case, we still have new investment and a better manager with the possibility of a successful player trading model in the future so there’s plenty to be optimistic about. It does have one obvious effect though. The probability of a Docks stadium isn’t good as Moshiri will use his salesmanship to elicit the most favourable deal utilising public money and minimising his own expenditure making Stonebridge Cross the likely outcome.
I would not have a clue about his business plan.

Legally speaking.

'Phantom bids'

Is all about intent.

Making bids for the sake of them without any realistic prospects for signing would be considered 'phantom bids'

Attempting to make signings going through the process of bid acceptance, player negotiations and medicals would hardly be considered 'phantom bids'

Intent is everything. Our bids are not phantom. Clearly.

Again, there's no proof of that. I agree intent is the key - but that's the problem; there's no proof whatsoever we actually have the intent to complete a major signing, as we haven't completed one.

With a pre-season completely wasted in terms of squad building, there's more proof we don't have intent, and until Moshiri pulls his wallet out and actually does something, I will remain massive sceptical of him overall.

I don't think they are phantom bids. Just that all we have to offer players like Witsel is money as we have no CL or even Europa. Hence him waiting for Juve

In that case, the logical thing to do is to move on to other targets and actually bring in players, instead of waiting around hoping beyond hope something will happen before the window shuts.

So we're either feigning interest, or ridiculously naive on how to use a transfer window to boost a squad - which is it?

naive is certainly a word I keep coming back to and mentioned previously.

I've got nothing against going for the top players. BUT I would like to see a time frame given and if no decision is pending then move on.

I'm concerned that we are being seriously naive and complacent to think that if we just wait everything will fall into place on deadline day.

It's a bizarre and hugely unambitious strategy that will see us burned.

It's a matter of urgency and needs sorted within days not by the 31st

WUM

We probably do, and as I suggested Walsh will spend the next 6 months identifying the targets.

Not the 3 weeks at the club.

So if, for example, you had the money to buy a lovely house overlooking the sea but had to wait because there were other bidders, or you could buy a house in crockie overlooking the turd farm right now......you'd choose the house in crockie? That's what you're talking about. The intent is to bring in world class players - who are keeping their options open.

And what world class players might these be?

Could you kindly point out who the "sugar daddy" is that is financing these purchases?

Please keep up......Witsel is one (and the reason he is still at Zenit)....and the "sugar daddy" is Moshiri. Where have you been for the past few months? :coffee:

The fact you said past few months has given me enough insight to how little you understand, he's not a sugar daddy and witsel is not remotely close to a move to Everton.
