we don't need to wait for a consistent goal scorer he already is one. what we need is others. even though dom was rightly criticised yesterday he was still getting in the positions to cause problems and miss chances if others did the same we'd have a lot less to worry about.
How is he consistent? 3 goals in his last 13 games.

My problem is he is good at reacting to loose balls in the box etc and ones placed on his head, but when you watch him you see he's not a top striker. Instead of running to the middle of the box or across the defender, he runs behind the defender and tries to outjump them. He has a poor first touch as we saw numerous times last night and doesn't have the ability to place a finish. It's been a lucky year, if he was playing at a team like Sheffield United he would be lucky to have a goal and would make McGoldrick look elite.

If he had netted his chances we win yesterday. Fine margins n all that and he has been brilliant this season we need to make more chances.
Other teams the goals are from all over we have to rely on two of our fastest players to score .... What League position would we be in if we took their goals away?
We have quite a hard run in with our injury problems too-

ERM he's been out injured.... plus made a few substitute games - sealed the Derby game by getting a pen I think you want a scapegoat -

The service argument doesnt work today. He got played through 3 times and couldn't control it. He missed 2 other great headed chances. It just wasn't his day and that's annoying because we needed him to step up today.
Maybe, but strikers miss chances and he did score. We deserved zero from the game.

Richarlison and King are wingers, and Kean was an unproven teenager who left months ago.

I know you like to add in caveats (eg penalties) to backup your opinion that Calvert-Lewin is one of the world's top strikers, but as far as I'm concerned, league goals are the only fair barometer, and while 13 last season and 14 so far in this one are very respectable, they're not evidence that nobody could ever hope to push him for his place. If he had multiple facets to his game, maybe, but he's basically just a good target man / poacher.

It's not a caveat though, penalties are deceptive. I remember we signed Johnson, who had scored loads of penalties. He didnt get them here, so his numbers plummeted. I want more from my striker than a guy who can score a penalty.

I'm not sure why would exclude goals in domestic comps, but let's do that for the sake of discussion. Who can we realistically get, who's under 25, and has scored at leas 13 none pen goals in each of the last 2 seasons that is affordable?

I'm happy to hear the suggestions, I just dont see many names knocking about.

For me he typifies our until recently standard of signing. Capable of producing class moments, threatens to look a genuine like a top player but ultimately he is a mid table striker.

Scored more goals from open play than anyone in the league hasn’t he? So even if he is missing these chances, every single other strike is either missing them too or not even getting in position to miss them. He’s in compnh with Salah Kane Vardy Fernandes and some of them have taken 6 penalties to boost their tally.

We defended appallingly in the first half lucky not to go in 4-1 down ..... he had some half chances I admit, but really we were poor the service to our front two was poor ....
Agree mate but we have been playing badly and scrape wins so there are fine margins. We didn't deserve anything though yes. We need to imprint ourselves on teams at home.

Agree mate not saying anything more than that these are chances Dom has taken before and he could have had two more yesterday but we were crap. I am worried especially with Doucoure out.

I get it’s a bit Allardyce but why don’t we go more direct some times?? Like push players further forward, have Richarlison running off him and 1/2 centre mids waiting for a knock down and play off that, like the goal we scored against Southampton.

We don’t have any wingers, our right back isn’t good on the ball and our midfield is slow and unable to move the ball or beat a man so it’s pointless at the minute trying to play keep ball at snails pace without James to do anything. Only times we look dangerous are when we get the ball forward quickly and direct.

I'm using league goals because the standard of opposition is the same for everyone.

That aside, the argument is that there needs to be an alternative, not a replacement. Even if you believe that Calvert-Lewin is so good that despite all the resources at their disposal, Everton couldn't possibly hope to find a striker anywhere in the world capable of pushing him for his place, there's still the very real risk of him getting a serious injury at some point. Then what?

I understand that some fans get a lot of pleasure from seeing their favourite player add to his goal tally, but there are going to be games where a different approach is required.
