At no point have I suggested he shouldn't be doing better. But the criticism has to be measured. Are the reasons why he's not doing better largely due to his deficiencies? Absolutely not. The majority of the blame for his current lack of form lies at the feet of his teammates and their abundant lack of quality.
What about what i'm saying would you say isn't measured?

Why do we have to aim a cross at our striker in the box?????

?

There really is just go getting through to you is there. It’s as if you’ve never watched football in your life. Are you telling me that the best strikers stand still and wait for the ball to be pitched perfectly onto their head? Why are you struggling so much to grasp the concept of movement?

Would he be performing better in a more cohesive team?

Most likely.

Could he be doing more in the matches to help the team out and create his own luck?

Most definitely.

Is he gonna cause more outrage by dressing up as a 1970’s pimp on the front cover of some dodgy European fashion magazine after we get beat by Burnley later?

You bet your sweet arse he is.

The only thing I'd say is - the discussion slating DCL is when he isn't scoring (not much now tbf) goes GOT Viral, but say from tonight, if he does go on and get a goal in each of the next 10 matches the discussion will all be praising DCL because he is scoring.

It's all relevant to the moment.

The hypocritical ones won't come back and eat humble pie.

DCL isn't one of the best strikers! Why are you finding that really really simple concept so hard to grasp yourself? You have expectations of him to play like the elite and when he inevitably fails to meet that ludicrous expectation you lambast him. He has limitations and we must improve chance creation for him. That's if you want the team you support to do well of course. I suspect you'd rather the dopamine hit received when you gloat on a football forum when he doesn't score instead though...

If he scores in the next ten games I’ll eat humble pie dressed in a skirt with matching handbag.

Well yeah, that much is very obvious. But our fans are talking about £40m+ moves to top teams, so we should really expect him to have a bit more about him than the likes of Chris Wood. In my view he isn’t even at the level of a Callum Wilson or Danny Ings, those players have movement and cause defenders problems. They aren’t top players either, they’re just decent Premier League strikers.

Nothing but this isn't just a private conversation between you and I. I'm commenting on the flurry of unfounded criticism in seeing from many others in this thread
You just seem to be defending him a lot to me, if i'm being measured then you don't really need to if you're only concerned about criticism that's over the top. As Mike said above, it does come across like you're just not accepting any criticism of him at all, even if that's not what you're aiming for.

To be clear, I think he's a good striker, and he has the attributes to play a really important role for us. I just don't buy that he gets a free pass for having scored 3 goals from open play in the past 12 months because we don't put enough good crosses into the box. One way or another he has to find a way to be a threat himself, whether that's through better movement to get onto the crosses or through offering more in other areas. The players on this team aren't capable of consistently putting great quality into the box so if that's the only way he's going to score we genuinely might as well not pick him.
