2022/23 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

….a fit and firing Dominic Calvert-Lewin is an absolute handful for any defender in the PL. Prodigious leap, great pace and power with a competitive edge. No CB would look forward to facing him.

A fit and firing Dominic Calvert-Lewin would transform our season but he’s physically fragile and it’s gross incompetence the club hasn’t acquired an effective alternative.

i like the young man, his injury plight is a shame but the club have managed the situation appallingly.
this, how we haven't even had a contingency in place with a like for like is appallingly bad management and may cost multiple tens of millions if we go down.

Thelwell had from 2nd August when Calvert-Lewin broke down with a major injury again until 1st September to get a couple of forwards in and salvage this season.

A whole month.

It was used to bring in an attacking player that could never lead the attack and the rest of that window was used to churn out BS stories to the media that we were chasing down hard alternative strikers to Calvert-Lewin such as Brereton-Diaz.

That is a sackable offence. The only problem is that he was probably in cahoots with the board and owner on that, so who'd sack him?

2nd August to 1st September is when the relegation fight was hatched. Hot on the heels of us just surviving the previous season 2 months previoulsy.

No problems with him travelling with the squad and being on the bench. But be absolutely bonkers for him to have anymore involvement than that tomorrow. That means he will be starting.....

People will moan at this but it’s more sensible to get his fitness levels back, throwing him in from the off after absences clearly hasn’t worked
U21 games were good enough for Godfrey, and he had a specific perfectly diagnosed and treated medium term injury. If we weren’t so desperate, Dom would play 45min, 60min, 80min games for the U21’s for me before he set foot on the bus. For his own physical and mental benefit as much as the teams. It’s just what you should do for players that have multiple re-occurring niggles that constantly turn into 4 month absences. But no, lob him into the fire.

I championed him playing for the 23s on his initial comeback, sure Dom himself would have been down for doing so and, like you said, it done Godfrey good for getting minutes in

It’s getting to the point that my first thought on hearing Lampard’s press conference was that I don’t want DCL getting cold sitting on the bench as there’s every chance it could aggravate the injury for the Brighton game.

It’s sad that I am basically looking at DCL in the same way that you would a pensioner in looking to keep them warm so their body doesn’t ache or seize up.
