2024/25 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

….thought Jiminez was a good contrast to DCL at the weekend. Conventional striker, he carries a bit of threat and I thought performed better than our striker.

Surprised to read Jiminez is 33 but another cheap Fulham recruit for just £5m, decent business.
The likes of Jimenez and Wood show that the club needn't be so desperate to put DCL on what are effectively Champions League wages.

He isn't even worth the amount he's on now.

For perspective, Jimenez is reported to have cost £5.5m for 2 year (+1 year option)
He’s also reported to be on between £78k to £100k per week.
So over 2 years he’s costing them between £130k to £152k per week
Over 3, if they take the option he’s costing £113 to £135k per week.
Unlikely to have any sort of sell on at 33-34.
So a free agent in DCL who will have a sell on to offset what would likely considered astronomical weekly wages in the region of £130k per week doesn’t look quite so bad imho.
NB Jimenez goal return looks better than DCLs so I’m not necessary saying DCL is better, but from a purely financial perspective I’d argue he makes more sense 🤷‍♂️

He is presumably still the fastest player at the club by miles. Not blistering from standstill at all, which if he was would make him buckets more chances. But once upright and sprinting he is stupid fast.

He is banned from running in this setup. Almost entirely stood between two grocks, back to goal, looking up into the sky for the ball to re-enter the atmosphere. He’s very good at it, but we are only playing to half his strengths to the teams detriment. He is fast, but rarely gets a ball played beyond him. And when it’s on, he gets overexcited at the prospect of some actual football and strays offside.

Everyone says Beto should play on the shoulder as he isn’t a “big no9” despite his frame. Dom can do both. He can’t and never will learn to finish, he is closer to retiring than he is breaking into a PL first team. But he’d be even more of a handful posting up AND running in behind. If he could finish, he’d have been sold years ago to balance the books.

All that said, not many top teams buy starting strikers because they work hard and jump high. Goals goals goals. He’s in a pretty crap situation based on marketing himself after the last couple of years and not sure what sort of offers he’s expecting. Free transfer or not, £120kpw strikers need to be a sure thing with “big chances”, and he isn’t.

Was he ever the faster player at the club?
Can’t recall anyone in the ‘team mates’ interviews ever putting him forward.
I recall Jarrad B being the most recently nominated faster player by a couple of them, and prior to that it was someone else who I can’t recall other then being suprised who they nominated.

I like Dominic Calvert-Lewin but he's not a striker you can rely on if he has time to think when through on goal. I feel he's better when the thought process (so to speak), is removed and he only has a split second to react and strike the ball goalward. When in a goalkeeper one-on-one situation etc., with time to think about what to do, he'd be better off just closing his eyes and putting his laces through the ball.

That's just my opinion as a non-qualified slob who fancies himself as a football expert on the internet.

…..apparently Branthwaite is the fastest at the club these days.
