Confirmed Signing Donny van de Beek

Nobody played him cos he looked like a rabbit in headlights every time he was on the pitch.

Never seen anybody so scared.
They did at the start though. Koeman lobbed him in and then it quickly went south. He definitely thought he had more time than he did but that's why he should have been slowly integrated.

We had loads of other options but Koeman insisted on playing him. After that he looked totally devoid of confidence.

He was never a bad player, even if he didn't suit the Prem. He was badly, badly managed and that's where it went wrong.

Like I said, plenty of very good players have needed time to adapt.

Now, I reckon VDB has a bit more to his game than Klaassen but he was actually the player Ajax promoted from their academy to replace Klaassen in their set up when they sold him to us and he played the same role in their side.

Mentioning Klaassen with regard VDB is just lazy IMO.

I mean just cos they blonde and Dutch, its madness.

Neither am I. Never doubted him technically but even Koeman, who really wanted him, admitted he thought his skill would overcome his physical frailties. Never worked out.

I mentioned Bremen cos he hardly ripped up trees there either before going back to Ajax.

Some leagues just suit players. Look at Haller for Ajax too.
Yeah 100%

I feel that VDB and Klaassen are very similar but I think VDB has a bit more presence about him. I think he'll suit the Lampard system given we're likely to try and get on the ball more.

He'd have been a pointless signing under Benitez.

No, it's because at Ajax - which is all we can judge VDB off because he's played about 12 minutes - they played in exactly the same role in the side. He was their replacement for Klaassen and was played in the same way. He was the third-man runner from midfield that Klaassen was.

VDB is a better passer with his range and he's probably got a bit more about him, but they are similar.

I think he'll be a good signing. Just like Klaassen could have been had we integrated him properly and played a system that suited that type of player more.

Klaassen was sold before they got relegated IIRC, but even so would that make him a bad player? Doucoure got relegated with Watford...

If they are going to adapt they need time. Klaassen was never given that.

Bloody hell, Klopp hardly used Fabinho - who came from Monaco - for the first six months of his Liverpool career. Now he's probably one of the best 6s in world football.

Not saying Klaassen was ever going to develop into an amazing, world class player, but he was 24 when we bought him and had been excellent at Ajax. He was a real talent. And he's back in the national set up now and is a good player for Ajax again.

He might never have clicked in the Prem but Koeman didn't give him time / use him right (he could have been played in Europa League games to keep his sharpness up for example) and Allardyce never gave him a chance.
He was still lightweight and largely ineffective at Werder (bar a good first couple of months) according to my mate who's a fan of WB, couldn't believe they nearly doubled their previous transfer record on him.

What's interesting is that despite a similar profile, Brands saw through DK immediately and punted him upon arrival, whereas he kept tabs on VdB for a good while if reports are to be believed, so clearly he saw a player in there.

I think VDB has a bit more physicality and plays at a higher tempo.

I know mate, look I'm not saying he was amazing or would have definitely ever have been a great player for us - I just think we didn't help him at all. He is a player that suits a very specific type of system and that's basically the Dutch model. It happens with a lot of Dutch players.

I think VDB has more to his game but in terms of what he did at Ajax, he was used in the same role as Klaassen used to be before he left for us.

However, I think he does that have bit of physicality to be able to make the step up. We can hardly say he's shown that so far though.

I agree. I think Klaassen was just too slow on the ball. But, it's why he should never have been thrown in straight off the way. He needed time. Now a lot of the time, Everton can't afford to give people that, I get it. But in that particular season we had 3 other number 10s so we really could have done. Maybe he'd have been a bit more useful than he was. Anyway, I'm happy we aren't bringing in Van de Beek to just be chasing long aimless punts up in the general direction of Rondon.

I agree with all of that, criminal bringing in four number 10s (who all played different systems) and giving them very little time to settle before making a judgment.

That said, even if we had accommodated DK, I strongly doubt he would've been up to the standard expected if I'm honest - so getting 14m back for him was almost as surprising as lashing all that money on him in the first place.

VDB looks a couple of levels above him, and if we can get another mobile midfielder then I think we should just about turn it around.

Happy with this. Think coming to us than down south made more sense especially for the term of the loan. Seeing talk of DVB being a Klassen reboot. Firstly Klassen was actually a decent player. Just not for us but hopefully DVB actually gets what he's been lacking at the moment and that's minutes. Can't be any worse than what we've got. Still not the answer to our current problem in needing a DM but I'm not mad at it. Welcome Donny. Hopefully you can show what you can do here.
