ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

The win on saturday has just served as a reminder to me how many of them just don't really understand what it's like to be a 'normal' fan. I found myself unexpectedly quite emotional after the game on saturday; I'd always sort of shrugged at the horrible Anfield record as one of those things that happen when your nearest neighbours are both the country's most successful club and also in league with the devil, but I was a little bit choked when they finally did it. I was at school last time we won there, I watched the game with my mum who died what seems an entire lifetime ago. I've been to college, Uni, moved to London and come back, got married, had a kid, seen a global pandemic, and the only constant thing in all that time was us turning up at Anfield and getting humiliated time after time. It made me laugh to see so many comments on twitter and facebook about reacting like we'd won the league, it just made me realise how so many of them just don't get what being a football fan is really about. Of course i desperately want to see us win the league and countless trophies, but whatever we win I probably couldn't love it much more than when when we cleared that final corner and I thought 'even Everton can't mess it up from here'.
Great post.
A huge chunk of Liverpool fans chose them in the 80's when they were winning trophies - no other reason.
They have no idea what it's like to go through the hard times and the dark years and supporting your club and team through thin and thinner. That's why the kids on Twitter and Facebook post such nonsense. They just don't get it and they never will. The pain and suffering is what true support is based on. You can only appreciate the highs if you have ridden the lows and how much sweeter it really is when you have. Enjoy!

Of all the criticisms I've seen, I do find the "you celebrated a win at Anfield" thing to be the most bizarre.

As people probably saw on here, I had no issue with Klopp celebrating the winner that Origi scored in the way he did. He apologised for it. Football, as with life is an emotional game, and you can't live your life begrudging other people enjoying moments of success. I genuinely don't know what universe they are on, that thinks people wouldn't be happy and celebrate a win.

It's funny, I wrote a bit on the main page looking back between the two games. In a way, I can remember it like it was yesterday. It was our 2nd win in a few years at Anfield, I'd only see us lose once to them, and never at Goodison. I wasn't even massively surprised we won last time.

It was only when the 95th minute went up that I actually felt we are definitely home and dry. It's funny I'm in a whatsapp groups with some blues and reds and switched the notifications off, but the reds were all saying, essentially once we went ahead we would win. That was certainly not my experience!

It's natural to look back and think a bit though. Remember where you were 20 odd years ago, the people you were with, the people who may not be here anymore etc. Why this has been crafted as some awful behaviour or small time or whatever else is beyond me.

There's some idiotic post going around about being there at Sevilla, a fluffing European final, and other such nonsense and proudly still supporting them.

What? How would losing in a final of a major competition even make the slightest dint to a real supporter's love for their club? Is that a real low point?

God, getting there would make it stronger than ever. They've never truly experience difficult times to the point they've become detached from reality.

They're akin to a spoilt celebrity who has a melt down because the champagne in their hotel room is 0.4C too warm and there's a crease on the bed.

I would suspect a back door deal for image rights for Messi for all of the "city group" would solve the issue for everyone; 250k PW on city's books or something similar

But someone is still picking up the tab aren't they?

I really hope we get to see Messi in the PL. Just from a selfish point of view. He's the best player to ever play the game, and while it's not peak Messi, I'd love to see him in person, if only to tell people about it in years to come.

They haven't got a clue. They were getting 30k in at Anfield when Hodgson was there. They ended up finishing half way up as well. If they had a relegation dogfight, it would be low 20's again like when they were last rubbish.

i'd agree - I think it would be a good thing for PL in lots of ways.

Dont want to go down the rabbit hole here but re tab - As long as abu dhabi can get away with it, the tab doesnt matter. It's a bottomless pit with motives well beyond football.

I'd imagine they would still want some idea of value for money though, which £1m per week doesn't feel to me.
