ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

The only thing separating us from the Juventus fans was a thin strip of what could only be described as wire netting.

The fans got restless, partly through the heat, partly through boredom and partly because they were fed up of being sitting ducks for the fireworks raining down on them.

Then the abuse started. The Juventus fans behind the chicken wire chanting, the Liverpool fans responding.

And all would have been fine had it not been for the police. The rubbish Belgian police who were armed to the teeth but had no bottle.

Dem bizzes wid no bottle doh

Couple of things here which might interest you based on a google search. http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/heysel-disaster---30-years-9350754

"The disaster saw Liverpool FC announce a self-imposed European ban, while, at Thatcher’s behest, the FA banned the five English clubs who had qualified for European competition, including Everton, who had qualified for the European Cup after winning the league."

Acceptance of responsibility?

"Seven were given three year prison terms and the other seven suspended three-year sentences."

Convictions because of responsibility?

"It would take 20 years from the disaster until the clubs met again in the Champions League.

In 2005 the Liverpool ECHO printed the names of the victims on its front page, above a banner headline which read: “We’re Sorry”

The match programme featured a two-page apology by Liverpool fan Terry Wilson, who was jailed for his part in the rioting, while Reds fans held a banner spelling out the Italian word ‘amicizia’ (friendship)."

Apology in the clubs official publication, accepting responsibility?

I've never met a red in real life who defends Heysel. I've never met a red in real life who says that it was any other fans fault. I've never met a red who says it was caused by anything other than a charge of the fans. I've never met a red who was there who has anything other than deep shame and regret over it.

I honestly die a little inside when I see our (mostly young) lads do the wall pushing motion, or reference it in any way. People died and Everton are the worst off? Nope, not for me. Anyone who uses the death of people to score points in football (regardless of who they support) is an absolute cretin in the eyes of the vast, vast majority of decent human beings.

And you really think that the "self imposed ban" was anything other than a damage limitation exercise??

show him some of this stuff - and remind him of the part Juve's Ultra's played. Their fans took on the police for two hours before the game kicked off with the fighting still going on during the game. They totally wrecked their end of the stadium, while the vast majority of Liverpool fans just waited and watched

I've never met a red in real life who defends Heysel.
I had one middle aged-to-elderly red say to me, not long ago, and I quote;

I don't know why there's a stink about Heysel, there was worse things happening every week on Goodison Road.

I have met some that still blame other fans, and I have met some that really think Heysel was 100% Liverpool's fault.

But that quote took the biscuit. I was silent in astonishment.

Crikey. What a loonatic

It certainly doesn't strike me as denying responsibility for what happened, which was the point of my post.

Go on RAWK and look at the Heysel threads

loads of them passing the blame about

One even saying they had a Juve flag day in the 90s so what more could they do

laughable

it strikes me as cold calculating self interest. A ban was going regardless of whether the RS accept responsibility, by adopting a 'self imposed ban' they thought that they could return at their own volition with as minimum a time away as possible.

I kind of see where you're coming from but you're making a mistake taking it as a personal attack on each and every Liverpool fan. We all have mates and relatives who support Liverpool and nobody is calling them murderers.

But the hypocrisy of the club and some of its supporters when it comes to Heysel is astounding. I refer you to an excerpt from an article on the Liverpool FC official site about Heysel:

It's an unbelievable example of revisionism and evasion of responsibility. The club and community have rightfully fought for the recognition of institutional culpability for Hillsborough. But to turn around and wash their hands of a disaster which their own supporters instigated reeks of hypocrisy. Liverpool fans aren't murderers, but the term is intended as a reminder of something their club has never taken responsibility for and continues to brush under the carpet
My Dad is a red, but I never get him a fathers day gift, because I view him as murdering scum
