England v USA, 12th June 2010

Why? they are only about 3 places behind England in the FIFA placings, the US are quite a strong side.

Lots of reasons!!

A) i'm English. I'd be massively fuming if we lost to anyone.
B) I have a new England shirt for the first time in years. (got 10 Lineker in back after baines was dropped!)
C) it's the world cup...what better time to get annoyed with my country?!
D) No offence to USA, Algeria or Slovenia but we should win all 3. I won't accept anything else.

I could go on.

Well, i'm not an England fan, but i'm certainly not a England basher either, they're a medicore team with one or two stretching to possible 3 world class players - i doubt they can go further than the Semi's, i think there is at least 6 points from the qualifying group, but i'd underestimate the US at your peril.

But are you English?

I'm not a fan of England. I am English.

If they had no world class players I would still be English.

Yep, if you're goading me to insult England - i won't, I hope they win - it'd be great. They won't though, because they are not a very good footballing side.

I'm not goading anything mate, just wondered. It's something that interests me, why so many English people don't want England to win - it's just weird. You can bet there won't be a Brazilian alive who won't want Brazil to win.

Also you don't need to be a very good footballing side to win trophies in knockout tournaments, it's about beating the team in front of you, the best teams don't always win.

Sorry mate, i didn't mean it in a defensive way.

The way i see it - England seem to have massive expectations on them from a media perspective, i don't meet many people who really expect England to win it?
I'm not saying i don't want them to win it - i agree there is a sickly bunch of people of who get off putting england down, i think it'd be a fantastic acheivment to win the tournament, this is the last chance saloon for a lot of players & a lot more weight of expectation for the next lot.

Good post. Don't worry, I'm concerned about USA. They've got talent but really we should do it. Mind you I've said it so often before. Anything could happen.

It seems I agree with everyone tonight!!

Ok, well the reason why there is massive expectation is because the players play in a league that has bar a few, the best players in the world playing it.

They are paid lots and lots of money, so they should be good enough. We have Rooney one of the best strikers in the world, we have Gerrard who has proven to be one of the best midfielders in the world, we have one of the best Left back's in the world and we have potential in other areas too.

The reason why people expect them not to win is down to previous tournaments where expectations have been shot down by moments of madness, or sheer bad luck.

This is the last chance saloon for this crop of players, and I believe we have better talent coming through and the future is more promising - if they can leave their ego's at the door - but this is football, and I went to watch my sisters kid playing in the U9's yesterday in Bebington, and they are all primadonas - especially when Nike sell customised named boots for kids.

"FIFA announced that referee Carlos Simon of Brazil will work the USA-England match. Simon worked three games in 2006: Italy-Ghana (five cautions), Spain-Tunisia (eight) and Germany-Sweden (five, plus a red)."

Simon (best-known for grinning at a Swede after red-carding him during their round of 16 match against Germany in 2006) was suspended by the Brazilian federation and banned from working any league matches for the rest of 2009-10. Somehow guys like him and Martin Hansson (best-known for missing Henry's two handballs, also missed a goal by Kaka in the 2009 Confederations Cup final) are allowed to do the World Cup.

Great. 4-0 to USA then. All penalties and also all with a smiley red card.

Why is this?

I think mainly because we have a patch-up defence that looks dodgier every team I see it. In the past we've had a bit of an embarrassment of riches in defence, now we have one or two good players and that's it.

It's probably also the fact that I'm four years older and don't get as excited about because I know that we're not actually that good.
