Euro2020 Knock Out Rounds

I haven't heard one media outlet in this country bring up the matter of massive home advantage for that lot.

If Italy were playing the final in Rome, having played all but one of 6 other games in Rome, there would be a massive outcry of foul play.

When Italy win this on Sunday they will be truly worthy champions of Europe, unlike England who will never have earned the right to legitimacy.

This is a unique tournament, however, I am still unsure why you are banging this drum so much.

If it was official that England were the only host country, in a normal situation, would there be as much outrage from you. Ever since the announcement was made that Wembley would host the semis and final it has been deemed as a proxy England tournament, a few countries were chosen to have all group games in their own country, not just England.

England by winning the group got the advantage of also having the last 16 game at Wembley, if it wasn't for COVID it would have been in Dublin, if they finished 2nd they would have played in Copenhagen and then somewhere else.

So, I get you point that home advantage has it pros, it also has its cons. You still have to play a game of football against another 11 players who may be good enough and professional enough to cope with a partisan crowd. Last night I thought Denmark were excellent at that and silenced the crowd very effectively, passed it around and at times England looked a bit lost. In the end the players themselves got back in the game and that in turn picked the crowd up a bit.

Lots of strong feelings in here on both sides of the aisle. I must be in the minority where I support England and want them to win, but also can’t stand the complete over saturation in the media, and the bandwagon jumping of people who clearly have no interest in football 99% of the time.

Watching last night was enjoyable, but in terms of emotional involvement, it is a fraction of the experience of watching Everton, for me.

I do actually agree with the exploiting for political capital element - shameful.
It will be one government minister after another using it to deflect from the calamity they perpetrated on us.

I said this yesterday and I stand by it:

This might not be an exact parallel, so bear with me. But I view the position of England's football team in this tournament as being similar to the predicament the Brazil team of 1970 and the Argentina team of 1978 found themselves in: knowing that any succss would be used as an affirmation of a regime.

You can be sure if England reached the final on Sunday and won it the government would exploit it to the full and the about to be massively out of control Covid19 infection rates thereafter will be lost in an avalanche of jingoism.

As said, not an exact parallel, as we dont live under a military junta. But it's not so much of a stretch to be dismissed out of hand.

So apparently cheating to win a penalty is now ok because it’s “our turn for a bit of luck”

I am beginning to hate the game

But going down at the slightest touch has been part of the game for years now?

...just like Denmark cheated to get the free kick they scored from.

You fell at the first fence: England are NOT the host country. Please disabuse yourself of that notion.

London was one of 12 host cities for Euro2020. THAT IS ALL. Their path forward was cleared for them.

Lol they won the bid to host the semis, final and group stage. If you want to question anything it should be the Germany game which was originally slated for Dublin. Personally I don’t know why Wembley got it after Dublin withdrew
