This can’t happen btw.

Hypothetically, England win on penalties, what happens then? The game finishes at about 11:15-11:30, and they call an emergency bank holiday with 15 minutes 30 mins to spare?

Businesses would absolutely be in chaos.

This is addressed in the article:

Downing Street sources suggested the timing of the match meant it would be much too late to give fans an emergency day off next Monday – but other options were being considered.

But it’s still pandering, populist horse guff.

I thought those not supporting England were the ones who were doing so on political grounds as some kind of protest against the racist fans?

I still haven't heard any plausible reasons for why any English person who likes football would not support his own country!

I think it's just become so fashionable to hate on England that some English people have chosen to go along for reasons that have nothing really to do with football but all-encompassing negativity.

They grasp for flimsy or vague political rationalizations to justify their stance but it's such a miserable and downright illogical stance to take and hurts nobody but themselves.

Don't you think it's sad that with our first final in a major tournament for 55 years instead of enjoying the moment they are choosing to wallow in well what is it exactly? A kind of spiteful self-hatred?

What do they do when these games are being played and everyone around them is celebrating?

Sulk in the corner muttering to themselves?
Well, as I say, I can only speak for myself, but I certainly don't sulk in the corner muttering to myself, nor do I have any spiteful self-hatred. Don't think I'm an overtly negative person either. I watch and enjoy the games, but I don't have any vested interest in the England national team, only Everton. Personally I've never understood how some Evertonians can stomach the likes of Gerrard, Terry, Henderson etc when they put an England shirt on, but each to their own.

I would imagine there are many, many different reasons why people don't support England, you're massively oversimplifying things. Maybe some do so because it's 'fashionable', and I'm sure there are many who have been turned off by the booing and attempted hijacking by the likes of Rees-Mogg and the tabloids, but unless I've somehow been fashionable for 35 years, I'm not in that category.

As for 'plausible reasons', that's entirely up to the individual - just because you can't understand their reasons for not supporting England doesn't delegitimise their reasons. Some people don't like football, some people don't like tub thumping or flag waving. Some people don't like any form of tribalism.

I can't understand why people not supporting England offends you so much.

Denmark game finished at 22:30, penalties take what 15 min max? (5 min preparations, 10 min the actual stuff, if it isn't like a 22-21 shootout) even in that scenario 22:45 wouldn't be that late imo.

Obviously I can't speak for anybody else, but just because I don't support England, doesn't mean I supported Ukraine, or will support Italy. All of these teams have a number of odious, racist fans, just like England (and every other country) does.

I'll watch and enjoy the game, and if England win I'll be happy for the likes of Pickford, DCL (if he even makes the bench) and some of the other young talents, but the idea of Johnson et al trying to take credit or bask in the team's glory will knock me sick. If Italy win I'll be largely indifferent.

But the sooper Ingerlund fans on here claiming anyone not supporting their country is a Marxist, an anti-Semite or a self loathing hipster should give their heads a wobble.

I just don’t really understand why you’re bringing politics into it? Can’t you just watch it for what it is: a football match.

Didn't they say it would be the Monday after next? Which would be pointless tbh as that would be 2 in a row where nothing/very little gets done.

It’s pointless anyway. Imagine not going out/boozing for the game because you have work Monday but then winning and finding out you have the day off? Cheers Boris I’ll just start on the gin at 11pm when everyone’s gone home.

Well yeah, I wasn't talking about people who don't like football or tribalism! I'm not having a go at my mum here!

I would never hate the national team because it has Liverpool players in it because at the end of the day I don't truly believe that Liverpool players or fans (my father included) are genuinely any better or worse than Englands or Everton's.

I used to go to work every day in Liverpool, with Liverpool fans and I never actually hated them! That would be mental! We would just wind each other up! I think when people truly do hate others because of what football team they happen to support then they really need to grow up.

And to be fair I never said it offends me, I said I don't understand the reasons they use to justify not liking the team especially when they bring politics and racism into it.

They can choose not to support the team but just don't claim it has anything to do with some kind of political protest!

I don't see it that way. For me England are the clear favorites to win on home soil. So I think there will be even more pressure.

If we are going on teams alone, we are nowhere near clear favourites, I would put it at 50/50.

Home advantage may give us a very slight advantage but even then there is a large possibility that the home support will work negatively. So again, with the chance of home support working either way I would put it back to 50/50.

They don't want England because of Brexit. Apparently. Seemingly forgetting that 70% of the English population DIDN'T vote for it.

Very bizarre logic.

Technically I could support England, I have lived here my entire life and on the surface am as English as rolling green fields, cricket on villages greens and institutional racism.

I don't support any nation when it comes to football though, my heritage choices are Scotland and the US Virgin Islands so no thanks. There is a simple reason for that too, when it comes to World Cups and Euros etc I just want to sit back and enjoy the football without having it ruined by the team I support letting me down. I do enough of that in normal football. I did the same with women's football and chose to not support anyone as such and just enjoy it for what it is. I still prefer certain teams to beat others in games but it doesn't bother me either.

Its slightly different with club football, you tend to chose to support the team who is near you or who family members/friends support. I feel the scouse thing and being an Everton fan, I don't "feel" England. It's not just football either, any sport, I don't support a team or sportsperson based on where they are from as that would be very limiting.

Everyone on this forum is working class.
I know this.

He is playing games with the people. "Look how nice I am giving you all a day off, well maybe, I will flip flop over it until it is too late to do anything about it. Its the thought that counts though right?"Opium of the masses stuff.
