I don't think Southgate got much right as opposed to not making ridiculous mistakes.

England progressed due to a combination of a fairly easy draw and some very talented players.

I give Southgate pretty much zero credit. He's simply extremely lucky IMO to be in the right place at the right time.

He did exactly what he did when we scored early against Croatia in the WC semi... Nothing. Last night's game was a carbon copy of that game. The more the game went on the deeper we dropped and the opposition took control of the midfield. In the WC it was Modric, last night Verratti and what did super tactician do, absolutely nothing. Kane had a great 1st half. 2nd half he was spent. Change him for DCL. Mount shouldn't have started. Saka and Sterlings pace coming in from the flanks getting behind their centre backs would have been better. After an hour he should have loaded the midfield and tried to hit them on the break. There where times when Chellini was turning up in the no10 position they where so high up the pitch. Southgate got it massively wrong when it mattered, again.

...it'd have been even worse for England if Rice hadn't had the game of his life.

It was madness surrendering midfield to a class Italian trio, putting them up against two Championship class holding MFs.

Yes, but all that stuff is massively overplayed. A good example and no more than that. We cant be looking to footy players to offer a lead against the powerful forces of reaction that have gathered in this country in the last 5 years or so.

You can see now that there's loads out there who are made up to now be taking a knife to Engand players for daring to put progressive viewpoints forward.

Looking to Southgate and his team to change matters is well short of what's needed in this dangerous period we are living through.

Agreed, we (as adults) should not be looking to footballers, but they do live in a celebrity bubble where kids, etc. look up to them. They should be there saying the right things. If a kid, whose parents are acting all racist, is watching and listening to these players then hopefully they will be questioning their parents behaviour, if the players/manager don't say anything then all they have is the actions of the parents as a moral direction.

Speaking out needs to come from all angles, again I think we are on agreement there. I am certainly not saying that footballers should be the only ones. Itoje, in the England Rugby team has been very vocal in these matters, as had the English Cricket team, these should be in conjunction with politicians but, at this moment, the problem is the politicians are the ones creating the division. These sports stars are looked up to by the people who will change this behaviour, the children and the youth of today will create the future moral fibre running through the country so, like it or not, the sporting people of this country should be active in speaking out and again should be admired for doing so, not put down and criticised for it.
