Manchester United have agreed a world-record £100 million deal with Everton for Romelu Lukaku that includes the sale of Wayne Rooney, who is valued at about £10 million.

United were looking to finalise the transfer last night as Premier League rivals Chelsea claimed that they remained Lukaku’s first choice despite not lodging a bid for the player.

Sources at Chelsea insisted yesterday that they remain in contention to sign Lukaku, but Antonio Conte, the manager, is furious that United have been allowed to steal a march on one of their prime targets. The club’s lack of activity in the transfer market has left the Italian deeply frustrated but sources said he was not ready to resign over it. Lukaku was due to report for pre-season training yesterday at Everton, but has instead stayed in Los Angeles, where he is on holiday. United are heading to the there on Sunday for the start of a three-week pre-season tour.

Ed Woodward, United’s chief executive, has negotiated a deal in which the club will pay £75 million for Lukaku, plus £15 million in easily achievable add-ons. It is likely that the player’s medical will take place in Los Angeles.

So um... when Jose blows up in 12 months or so and gets sacked like he always does, what happens to Rom then? Does he start following him around from club to club?
