Fair enough, but that's what this thread is all about, isn't it? But yeah we finishing 4th and Liverpool losing out on the title would be enough to make everybody happy I guess.

Yeah, I was just thinking how strange it'd make me feel if it happened.

Pretty much how I feel mate. It's the league title, it's the greatest accomplishment in football. Versus 4th place. Which gets you a qualifying round tie.
I'm not saying I'd ever forfeit silverware - but you don't get a trophy for 4th. Yo don't even get automatic Champs league, there's a qualifier between you and the £12m+ that awaits.

Well, there's another thing.

Would people not take the option to go back in time and deny them the Champions League win if it meant we finished 5th that year? I guess hearing the "WE'VE WON IT FIVE TIMES!" chant and seeing car stickers everywhere to this very day would have a bearing on your opinion with that question!

Pretty much this really. Again, levels.

I cried myself to sleep the night they won the Champions League - Everton finishing in a half-decent position in the league meant very little in comparison.

Someone saying they'd hand Gerrard the cup if it meant 4th for us is quite frankly incomprehensible to me - I'd genuinely rather lob off my own hands than give him a cup with them - but I can understand the logic if Everton is 100% the focus.

But for me I'm not afraid to admit the local rivalry has a massive bearing on my overall emotions as a football fan. I wouldn't be quite the same Evertonian if I didn't care about the other lot. They're the other half of the circle to me and part of the ups and downs of the whole thing.

I'm from Liverpool as well yanno. Face Liverpool fans on a daily basis too.

But don't go to Goodison every fortnight to cheer for Liverpool's opponents. And I'll celebrate like a feral monkey if we beat City.

I want 4th.

I'm not arsed what Clough said tbh. It's more of an achievement to win the Champions League than to win the Premier League. You don't have to get the better of the best sides in the world to win the latter.

You do have to get the better of the best your own country over a period of 10 months though. Which arguably says more about the quality of your squad than winning a knockout tournament. For example Liverpool finished 5th when they won CL in 2005 and Chelsea 6th in 2012.

Not that I'm taking away from winning the CL, like I said, I think they're equally prestigious.

Didn't say you wasn't, just said it was a factor. Your focus is 100% Everton and you obviously don't care about across the park, and I understand that. But that isn't the case for me, and I don't see why that is such a hard opinion to understand.

I'd hand Gerrard the trophy myself if it meant we finished 4th.

Imagine hearing the Champions League tune at Goodison, imagine going toe to toe with the best in Europe at a night game at Goodison. Absolute scenes.

4th doesn't mean going toe to toe with the best in europe, though. We should have learned this by now.

It means a two match tie vs some dodgy feckers from turkey or something with the reward for winning that being going toe to toe with the best in europe.

And it will be Martinez's first ever competitive game vs a non british team.

Strangely enough, the possibility of the playoff game or not isn't an issue for me. For example, I'd take 4th ahead of an FA Cup win personally (and got a lot of stick for saying so too on here!), so I place a lot of emphasis on 4th for Everton.

But it'd still pale into comparison given the situation on offer with this thread.

Well, obviously.

I do care to an extent, that's not the issue here at all.

It's when it's to the detriment of our own team is when there's an issue.

Too many people caring what other people think and fearing that there'll be some banter they can't handle.

So the media will go crazy about LFC winning the league - so what? It's not like LFC are ignored now is it? BT Sport is practically the LFC channel, and MOTD has at least one ex-Red as a pundit per show. They employ over 10 different ex-Reds over the course of a season.

If they win the league, nothing is really going to change. Do I want it to happen? No of course not, they are our rivals and I can't stand them. But given this magical hypothetical choice - do I want my own club, the one I care about, the one I follow all over the country watching, paying over £1000 a year supporting, do I want them to SUFFER, just so that the other lot don't win the league? Or do I want Everton to achieve their best possible league finish, qualify for the CL, and to hell with whatever the other lot win?

It is a no brainer, there is no debate. If people think there's a debate, they are caring too much about what other people think, and not caring enough about what is good for Everton Football Club!

Exactly. So the only difference is the level of that extent. That's why I can't understand people just blowing off other opinions when it's quite clear where the opinions are derived from.

Nah, I want everton to win every game and get 4th, it'll be superb.

I just am wary of the whole '4th means Cl and riches' thinking. Though I will say that I'd be happy that it's Bobby lining the players up for those games. One of the reasons the possibility of 4th didn't get me too excited last year was I'd have put money on us losing any play off game we played under Moyes.

"We don't care what the redsh!te say...."

Can't believe any 'supporters' care so much about Liverpool winning the league that they would potentially sacrifice us getting in the Champions League - it's the absolute definition of bitterness

It's Everton all the way for me, Liverpool do not register on my priorities
