Everton January 2022 Transfer Thread

Do we people seriously think we’re selling Mina and keane?

Keane won’t be going.
Mina is all about his contract and high wage and his injuries, so unfortunately he will go even though he’s much better than Keane. Id sell Keane, Mina abs Holgate. 50/60mil and go and buy a top class CB and go abs get a 32/33 yr old in a free.

Keane’s not good enough for where we want to be

Makes me laugh at times on here, people ripping into our transfer strategy for the last 10 years (rightly so), then expect us to sign about 7 players including youngsters and expect it to work seamlessly.
The truth is half the players who should be gone, will still be here at least next season, and if we were lucky enough to sign 7 players I would expect 2/3, maybe 4 if we are really lucky to work out.

Were doing nothing for 2 more seasons anyway.

It makes sense to bring in young lads and enjoy watching the team improve with them.

I think it is clear that we don’t have the scouting department capable of spreading its resources to suitably look at 3-4/5+ signings.

I don’t think any club has had real prolonged success in bringing in multiple players every year. Personally, I think the golden number is 2 first teamers each summer window and maybe 1 in January with either a few loans or young prospects for depth.

Depends on if the club is prepared to take 2 steps back for 5 steps forward.

Benitez is manager, were doing nothing for another 2 seasons so he may as well recycle 50%+ of the squad.

Michael Keane is the same as James Tarkowski or Ben Mee, a player who can do well when asked to consistently head balls away from his box but none of them have a positional understanding fit to make them a top class CB. He has some good attributes but every player at PL level does. He is not fit to elevate a team on his own and he should not be close to being a first choice starter CB in a team wanting to win things.

Keane, Tarkowski and Mee can do a job in a good team as a second centre back alongside a real leader but any less and you get what we have, mixed performances.

Agreed, theyre all Burnley level players for a reason.

Selling Keane and Mina frees up around £200k p/w in wages and brings in around £50m.

Stay with me on this, it's about to get crazy.

We could use some of that money to bring in a new CB.

Correct ;)

Are we linked with Ramsay?

Yes mate.

It's almost like I think Keane is a useful player when in a decent side and aside from stretches here and there we are largely not a decent side.

Youre currently in a higher state of Iwobi.

Are you suggesting:

1) that if I can't name someone, then that means no-one's available; or

2) you think no-one's available; or

3) @Zatara needs to offer up another wishlist of young European options?

It should be option 3.

We`ve missed the boat but my preferred 1st choice CB would be partnering Godfrey with someone like Fikayo Tomori, both young, athletic, aggreessive and with obscene pace for CBs.

Nice thought.

What's been fairly clear so far when I've seen Godfrey play centre half is that he isn't good enough in the air and that he switches off occasionally ( interestingly he doesn't do this at left back although he is found wanting positional, which is to be expected as he is neither a full back or left footed).

So Godfrey is still a work in progress a very useful utility defender.

Personally I think we need two new starting centre halves and at least one of them has to be commanding in the air.

I think from a coaches perspective you can teach defending and positional play and a lot comes from experience of playing games, so if Godfrey is the future I`d be playing him in there every game which will benefit us in the long term.

Godfrey and Tomori have the elements you can`t teach or train players to have like Pace and athletism.

Does that make sense, it would be nice to buy 2 1st choice CBs but what would they look like? Who can we get for the money we have or haven`t got? I`m a fan of giving youth the chance because they rarely let you down, they will be inconcictent but they dont generally hide like half of our squad....

The club is deep in the mire, financially speaking. We need to recoup some transfer fees and try to get a spiralling wage bill under control. if we don't, we will continue to record heavy losses (admittedly they will reduce over time) and continue to be curtailed by Prem spending rules.

Selling the likes of Digne, Mina and Keane (high earners, still under 30, still in long contracts) is preferable to selling the likes of Gray, DCL and Richarlison (young, exciting, creative, goalscorers). Why? Because Digne, Mina and Keane have peaked. They are currently the best they're ever going to be and regardless of whether that level is good enough or not, we as a club are not in a position to take advantage of it on the field.

Sell them, bring in new, younger defenders and help the club heal financially. This buys time, which allows us to keep Gray, DCL and Richarlison for longer - they're all 24 / 25 years old so we should be aiming to keep them for three more seasons AND making sure they all have 2+ years left on their contracts at that point (so that when they are 27 / 28, and at their peaks, their contract situations benefit us if we need to sell them).

Like it or not we are currently a selling club due to five years + of awful financial mismanagement. So let's sell the guys who are at their peak value and keep the guys who are going to get even better. Obviously if we could shift some of the other high-earning dead wood that would be massively helpful, but the likelihood of selling the bulk of Tosun, Gomes, Gbamin, Sigurdsson and Delph in one window for any sort of decent money is very low.

Only issue with that is that Tomori is about 5’11 and with Godfrey being around 6ft and not the best in the air we’d get targeted with crosses and set pieces. Tomori would of been a decent alternative when we bought Godfrey but not an ideal CB partner.

The Tomori boat has sailed, AC Milan will want top dollar.... as has the Zouma one. Hopefully that is the profile we are looking at and our scouts are out there with identified targets.

I think its clear that the Mykolenko deal was done in the knowledge Digne wont play for us again, being we havent done any other deals I think that shows we arent selling anyone else, no one to replace. A little disappointed by that TBH as it is clear we need reinforcements, as Everton always do if we do any significant deals it will be much much later in the window OR last day.

I hope not but this is Everton

I don’t think it’s as clear as that tbh, the Mykolenko deal pretty much came from nowhere. For all we know we could be working on 2-3 deals in and out that haven’t leaked yet
