Everton January 2022 Transfer Thread

Coleman has been exceptional for us up until the leg break and now age also catching up with him.
Up until 5 years ago he was probably in the top 3 RBs in PL consistently season in season out.
Yes he was never technically great but made up for that and more with his determination, fitness and simple fact he was helluva effective for us both defending and attacking.
Hibbert was an extremely limited footballer that could half defend.
Comparing the two is embarrassing for anyone that can see past the last few years.

See I'm happy with Patterson as a target but this idea some fans have got in their heads that he's going to go on and become our right-back for years for certain is a bit mad.

He's played 27 senior club games... in Scotland, and most of those haven't been starts.

That is a concern of mine - feel like he should be signed as an understudy to someone currently in their prime years.

Added to that, his defensive cover when he forays forward would be..... Keane and I struggle to see how it works. Surely going to take all of Alan also?!

Hibbert could be that defender because he completely avoided leaving his own half.

Hundreds of people on this forum in their late teens and twenties could defend if they had the luxury of staying in their own half. But the game requires a FB to get up and down the pitch. When that happens, something gives; you have to show you have better than average attacking ability and are able to at least on most occassions be able to get behind the ball and offer yourself as a nuisance value. That's what Coleman did and what I;m telling anyone who'll listen Patterson will struggle badly to do. Patterson is a way better crosser of the ball than Coleman, and that would be his only advantage.
Agree with much of this, Coleman was way ahead of Hibbo especially attacking wise in his prime(Hibbo was a stopper and decent at it but not a lot more) he was an attacking right back with acceleration and took us up the pitch even when he wasn't creating and for 60k was a steal, he has been let down by the club who haven't brought his replacement in early enough and left Seamus to be exposed also his game changed after he broke his leg that half a yard has gone. I haven't seen enough of Patterson to judge also he's a kid not sure we can judge fully what he's going to be on a handful of appearances. I do have concerns since we need someone to come straight in but if he can share the games with Seamus the rest of the season and then take over next season it could work. Especially if the new LB is going to tuck in more and Patterson will be the one pushing on.

On the @davek flipside though i would rather we pay circa £10m (plus add ins based on performance clauses being met) for a young RB with potential than another journeyman from Arsenal. Have no idea where the 'he cant defend' shouts are stemming from, playing in the two horse league up here means the fullbacks dont really defend but it doesnt mean they cant.

Exactly.

But given we're probably going to be mid-table fodder I can see why you'd take the risk. But seen some fans - mainly on social media which I know shouldn't be judged too much - acting like he's the next Cafu. The lad has hardly kicked a ball in anger for Rangers. He might be great and it's a good signing to get him in though. But wouldn't be expecting too much of him.

It's like on the other side. Mykolenko is going to need six months to settle into the Prem. But we're desperate to get rid of Digne and it does look like the ostracisation could well damage that. That's why Rafael's an idiot, frankly, to so publicly fall out, even though I know Digne takes his share of the blame. We could very easily end up in a situation where we get to the end of January and are desperate for anyone to take Digne (which is mad, cause he's a very good player) on their terms which could cost us a loan with obligation to buy or whatever. Hopefully it doesn't come to that. But in an ideal world, Mykolenko learning off Digne for a few months would be great.

I've just not seen enough of Patterson to know if he's good or not. I'm sure he's a talent - everything I've read says he is. But some people are acting like he's the answer to the issue right now. He might well be and that'd be great but bloody hell, there's serious doubts about Mykloneko tbh but at least he's got plenty of senior experience.

All attributes have to be taken into balance. In a scenario where a top winger in the league was cutting in from the flank and running into our penalty area who would you want to stop him? For me it’s Hibbert all day long, in fact he’s probably the top of the list for that for any full back we’ve had since Moyes joined the club. His timing of the tackle, positioning, body shape, and tackle technique was miles better than most full backs we’ve had.

You’re right though that going forward he was a complete non entity whereas Coleman in his prime could get up the pitch a lot easier.

The modern full back has to be able to contribute going forward but it’s just my opinion that the fundamentals of defending are being overlooked now when assessing players. That’s why I’m not bothered about Digne going, in the same scenario as above I think he’s absolutely terrible and has been done countless times for lunging in, being out of position, allowing crosses in, silly fouls etc. He has been good going forward but that hasn’t really moved us on as a club. Even Guardiola more often than not backs Zinchenko because he does the defensive ground work far better than his other options there did.

There’s very few fullbacks who can do both now though (we should have got Reece James whilst we had the chance) so we may have to pick our position with what we go for. The issue with a lot of Evertonians is that they want a back 4 where every player is an attacking threat and that’s just not going to happen in a balanced team.

Coleman came from Sligo and then had a short spell at Champions League flying Blackpool before he started playing for us. Not sure it matters all that much if the talent is there.

I agree, I like both, just not sure if we can chuck both in at the deep end. Surely the LB will be pretty much ready?!

Well thats no basis to judge wether the lad will progress or not.
If the scouting has been done they will have known about him for quite a while.

Of course he could bomb out in the Prem, like many even seasoned pro's have done. But he has bags of time on his hands to progress here.
I think he's got every chance to do well for us from what i've seen of him.
