Everton January 2022 Transfer Thread

It's at least good to see some of the expectation around Patterson getting dialled down a bit.

Last night it was all talk of a Robertson or Tierney. I think we all know that isn't the case. If it happens and he gets signed by Everton he'll need a lot of work on him to get him to the standard of a PL FB who can get up and down the pitch defending as well as attacking.

Getting forward for 20 minutes every week fresh off the bench against Dundee United and St Mirren is one thing, starting matches against all but one or two PL teams and he'll be demolished quick smart.

Still pedling your anti Scottish agenda....carry on.

But it works both ways, he couid be to good for that level and hit the ground running in the prem. we don’t know, what we don’t know

Which is difficult when you are posting hundreds of millions of losses, on the verge of FFP punishments and having £1.6 million to sign 5 players the summer just gone!

Thats what people are not understanding - I dont want Longstaff, he wouldn't be in my top 20 choices for CM if we had money to spend but the reality is we dont have money to spend at present.

We'll sign the LB/RB likely from Dignes sale and if there is any money left over we'll possibly bring a CM in to compete with Doucoure/Allen but come the summer when we lose Gylfi/Delph and possibly Gbamin I cant honestly see there being much money available for 1-2 quality replacements on top of a RW like Diaz, possible CB etc. hence why Benitez will look at 1-2 bargain type signings like Longstaff on a free deal.

….yes, it is difficult. It’s a dire situation we are in because for years we’ve had individuals bringing in average quality for lots of money on big contracts.

We get out of it by buying good footballers. Nobody is suggesting that is easy but it’s not impossible if we employ the right people and have the right governance.

The fact we have a small spend envelope does not mean we should bring in players who are not good enough or no longer play like the game matters to them.

That’s if you actually believe the £8m bid.

The only talk of any bid from within Rangers, who publicly try and get bidding wars for their players all the time, came from Gerrard who in a post match presser with fan media. And even then that was them asking him about the bid, he actually said he hadn’t heard anything about it and even asked how much the bid was supposed to be. The price mentioned was £5m.

Scottish players from the smaller clubs have had bids/interest at similar prices for poorer players. No surprise they think they could probably get more with the money in England.

No fullback in Scottish football just now is costing £14m or anything close to it. That’s even with fullbacks being a premium down south. And Scottish fullbacks to a lesser extent.
Very reliable journos we’re saying a bid of £8-9 million had been rejected, if he was as average as you are saying, you’d think they’d bite our hands off.

I suppose the counter might be that Longstaff does play the game like it matters. Whether he is good enough or not is open to question. He was decent under Benitez when at Newcastle I'm told, but hasn't done a lot else since then.

….he looks quality to me. You can only go by what you see & I’ve mostly seen him at international level. Very composed in possession is a great sign for a very inexperienced youngster playing for his country. He has the quality to join in with possession play with teammates and it was clear to me they trusted & rated him.

As you indicate, it’s not a concern that he plays well in a poor league, it would only be a concern if he was poor in a poor league. Lots of top players start their careers playing in lower standard than the PL, if that was a factor they’d never move.

Poor @davek reaches a quick partisan decision on footballers, it’s actually quite encouraging he doesn’t rate Patterson. His defending will definitely improve playing and training with seasoned professionals. I’d have no fear him coming straight into the side.

….I was hinting more at Barkley and Countinho with that point. Quality and attitude are definite criteria, I’d add in athleticism and a good injury record.

I’m a bit ambivalent regarding Longstaffe, I haven’t seen enough to make an informed decision, although lots on here think he’s poor & @ForeverBlue92 says he’ll only improve our bench.

We have Delph Davies and I remind every one of you, Alex Iwobi
Barkley or Coutinho are a massive upgrade on the above. Anyone who wants to stay bitter about the past, so be it, but don’t whinge the next time Iwobi gets the ball

Bring them both in - loan only!
