Everton January 2022 Transfer Thread

Yep, but other than DCL I can't think of another player who any manager we've had in recent years has managed to improve

Benitez has improved Doucoure and Mina noticeably in a short space of time and most people would agree that Townsend and Gray look in the best form they've been in for an awfully long time (if not ever). I'm just vaguely hopeful at the moment that we've got a manager in who *can* actually improve players. It's a large part of the reason I'm not against the idea of Winks or even Van Der Beek for that matter and another why I wonder if the likes of Iwobi might still have something to offer. It's pushing it, but I've not totally dismissed the idea.

Would it be unreasonable to say that Iwobi has also improved.

Another vault potential here, but I've gone back to having a vague glimmer of hope on Iwobi - mostly based on how he played at Brighton and Benitez's recent comments on him...

“In terms of his future, his attitude, the way that he is training and playing, I am really pleased

I think that the fans appreciate that he is giving everything on the pitch.

And we are working specifically with him and with the wingers about movement and positioning.

And then I think he is improving and he is enjoying this improvement.

And I still [think] we can improve him a little bit more because he is working so hard in the training sessions and he has so much potential.

[If we] keep working with him, I think he will be a much better player at the end of the season.”
I wish I could be optimistic but the mental side is so important in sport. Iwobi it is a mentality midget. We are not an easy side to play for. Perhaps if he went to a Southampton or a Brighton with less expectation he could improve

He needs clear instructions and strong coaching. Take away the responsibility of having to think for himself and just tell him what to do. Will he ever be more than a functional squad player?? I don't think so personally but others will tell you his output according to the stats is very good. I trust my eyes and i see a player that has ability but doesn't appear to be able to use it. That said I use to think the same think about Antonio at West Ham and look at him, sometimes it just clicks and maybe that's what will happen with Iwobi. I guess, the problem is, given the money we spent on him we really should be expecting more than a functional squad player who may suddenly blossom.
If someone made a decent offer i would still sell.

So you’re telling me the cockney media are trying to flog the cast offs from their darling clubs, to us.

I doubt we would pay even half what Spurs wanted. And he doesn’t come across as the type of midfielder Rafael would want.
Didn't Benitez play Jay Spearing over at the pit?

Good attacking footballers have to be able to make good decisions on the fly. He clearly has footballing talent. I recall a club video earlier in the season where by consensus he was voted the most skilful player at the club. I don’t like the Antonio comparison because Antonio came to the game late so it took him time to develop the fundamentals, technique, tactical acumen required to accompany his raw physical gifts. Iwobi came through one of the better football academies in the country so it is unlikely you are not going to see an Antonio level improvement. Perhaps The story of Demari Gray might offer some hope for Iwobi although it is still early days for Gray
