Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

I'm not suggesting we should, just what I think will happen.

But, he's played 104 PL games across the last 4 seasons and your argument works both ways didn't it. Just because he's turning 40 doesn't mean he will suddenly stop being able to play football.

If you look around the league, players are effectively able to play longer now and it's not unheard of that outfield players play until they're 40. Don't forget, Moyes had a 40 year old Giggs playing at Utd.

Personally mate I think it does mean that. We saw it with Distin, players at that age can suddenly overnight just lose their legs entirely. Personally I think this has already happened with Young, which is why he hasn’t been instructed to do anything other than stand in a position and kick the ball away when it comes near him for the last year. It would be ridiculous to give a 40 year old a new contract in my opinion and I don’t think Moyes will entertain it.

I think we all know we won`t be spending huge amounts in the summer, I`m sure those saying save the money fully expect the club to spunk £100m or more but that simply is not going to happen.... we all know it, plus players signed permanently now will have been here next season reducing the task in the summer.

And bedded in.

The whole situation still feels like short termism is in charge.

It doesn't feel like any permanent roots are being planted either on the ownership or management side of the club.

His role has changed since Moyes came is as well, hes more or less an impact sub now and a utility, hes played wide right, right full and left full under Moyes so far.

We still need to get the average age down across the squad, its the oldest in the league at 29 I think then, I think we have 8/9 players aged 30+ It's why when it comes to the contracts thing with the likes of Gana and Doucoure, it simply has to be one or the other imo not both.

It's not even a choice I think mate, one still looks better than we will be able to easily recruit without a massive fee (if then) the other has most tearing their hair out on a weekly basis and is massively flawed for the position he plays in.

For me the recruitment needs to be in that 21-24 age range in the main. But with some top level experience as a preference.

I'm guessing now but the prime areas I'd say will be the teams that fail to go up this season from the championship, the teams that go down to it from the prem, and looking at academy lads from the 'big' teams who may be looking to move on and have had decent loan experience or are just naturally talented players who aren't getting the minutes they want. Combined with looking at the continental market at those teams around the EL level with good younger players who won't cost the earth.

Need to steer clear of lads mid twenties or over who've busted out after big moves to the elite clubs, desire too low often and wages and fees too high. Also swerve anything to do with Chelsea full stop they are massively overpaying even on younger players with huge contracts, commercially means they aren't value for money, swerve any player with desire questions and don't get involved in bidding wars either - and avoid going after players the likes of united, Chelsea etc are after as we will just be wasting time.

I'm not too concerned about this window, I don't think there was too much out there for our pocket money.
But...... we had better be ready for business as soon as the window opens, no messing about, have the players identified and lined up, get it done and signed.
This is Everton though, probably 4 or 5 in on the last day.

Even though they spent more than that first summer at Roma, a club which financially was in a mess when they took over with less revenue than we have now.

Fwiw Moyes first sub when 3-0 up against relegation fodder was to bring on Young over Harrison, Armstrong, Sherif or Patterson. It's definitely plausible he gets a new contract.

We could have negotiated a settlement with Chelsea over Broja but chose not to.

Leeds asked if we’d terminate the Harrison loan as Fulham were interested but we chose not to.

The disappointing window is in part due to the lack of expertise / business acumen within the club. This will take time to remedy.

Absolutely, which is why I'm reserving judgement until later down the line. Disappointing, but a very long term mess won't be resolved within a few months

If we find ourselves going into next season down to the bare bones then absolutely I can understand the criticism.

Remember when Dave went missing off here for months last season. Personally I thought it was wonderful. But I do also think for his own good he needs to go again. He's having a meltdown and it can't be healthy.
He's lost the plot completely after having backed the snot-faced, bald coward to the hilt, only to be shown up mere days later by a half-competent manager, who's managed to amass 9 points with consummate ease, amid an injury crisis without any reinforcements whatsoever.

On topic: I would've liked a winger in on loan as cover, but given the calibre of the players that were linked (Fellows, Nuamah), I can understand the risk of keeping our powder dry until July.

I’d sooner spend 0 pounds on no players than whatever money we have on panic signings or overpriced players in the Jan window. Clearly, the sham that is PSR is also hanging heavy over the club still, and why wouldn’t it - I’m certain if we make the smallest misstep, we will get hammered again, unlike the scabs who seem to be able to do what they want (except maybe United, who must really be in the brown stuff judging by their window.)

Also feels like TFG have decided that thelwell ain’t for them and so he will be on his way at the end of the season. They need to have all the pieces in place and ready so we can go on the first day on the summer window, as that’s gonna be quite the rebuild.

We’re taking a bit of a risk now, so hopefully injuries are done in the main ans we don’t get too many more bad ones. I trust Moyes to pick up enough points to see us safe, couldn’t say that about the previous custodian.

Moyes will also have to use some of the youth players at some point, so we may see sherif getting mins, especially if we’re chasing a game - it won’t be Ashley Young coming in every match.

This window was a little disappointing imo, but we also need to be realistic and pragmatic - it’s going to be a pivotal summer for the club and the new owners.

I hope not, but I think we'll see him getting another year.
