Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

Clearly chermiti and broja will be returning sooner rather than later, so unless there was a genuine option that immediately improves us, I get why we haven’t signed a striker.

Some of the fees this window are just ridiculous - think pep has defo had his kecks ragged off on a couple of those signings.

Theres also potentially a new sherif in town…..

I’ll get me coat.

For me, this season has always been about getting through it. Sort new ownership, manager and rebuild in the summer.

That said, I think we could/should have been able to bring in players who are capable of improving us now, who'd also be part of the future.

We need quantity as well as quality in the summer - we need a squad, I'm disappointed they weren't able to identify even just a full back or winger who could come in.

David Moyes was saying they were working on 2 or 3 deals - they were needed.

Overall i think there are big question marks about how we apply the DOF role here, that we have never overcome - maybe we never will.
We will if there’s sufficient change within the commercial structure of the club. I hate to say it but this city is full of ponced up business people who think they’re the Big I Am, when all they are is big fish in a small pond. Liverpool’s a boss city in loads of ways but it’s a long way from being an international business powerhouse.

Gut the structure and bring in people who have serious business nous and the club could enforce any version of DoF it likes and do it successfully. We’ve been crap at every commercial level of the business for years (thanks, Bill) so we need big changes internally just as much as we do on the pitch.

Trouble is, we don’t yet know if the yanks are asset strippers of the Glazer mould, or see us as a long term investment that involves us challenging at the very top.

Not that I know anything. I’m completely high off the fume in here today.

Can`t wait till everyone is bemoaning the lack of an actual striker in the next few match threads... I think there might be quite a few hypocrites that say this was a good window and will moan about lack of strikers in the match threads.

Lets see shall we?

it doesn’t make anyone a hypocrite to say was a good window or a bad window

we don’t know why the actual haven’t went through

your moaning about utterly everything with the club mate

I suppose it is what it is with this transfer window. We have players coming back from injury bit by bit so the squad will be stronger. Defensively we have cover at full backs and CBs with O'Brien given a run of games. Midfield players to come back and this new addition. Up front Beto and Chermiti to come back soon with Broja and DCL to return. I think this will be sufficient to keep us up. Then in the summer rejuvenate the squad in the summer.

You know what I'd like? A nice Brighton-esque announcement shortly of a player signed who will join on July 1st.

A tasty little morsel that shows foresight and where some of the planning of the last few months has gone. Ideally someone whose name sounds like "boo" or contains the word "boo", too, so we can get ourselves ready.

Being accepting of the fact that no strikers were available, affordable, and/or willing to come to us in Jan, and acknowledging we are short of fit strikers in the squad don't have to be mutually exclusive mate.

You and Dave are desperate to suggest they are, though, so you can continue the rampant cryarsing that I guess makes you feel better?! Whatever your reasons, best of luck with it.

Excellent post. The jury is out on the texans. Personally just my opinion but that transfer window was negligent. An injury to Beto and were struggling. Used to make me laugh with the likes of Barrett Bacendale, the hundreds of hangers on at Finchy and the joke of a scouting system.

If God forbid Beto was injured, could we make an emergency signing?

I hope that doesn't come to pass of course. But I have thought about it. Would some forward from the Saudi League then suddenly be considered "good enough".
I think its less about the title and more about the application and governance mate.

You look at some clubs like Chelsea and Spurs and the manager doesn't have a clue what's going on with transfers its all done by the DOF, arguably a lot of other clubs.

Other clubs employ a hybrid model, maybe Villa and Arsenal. I think a natural tension exists between a manager and a DOF in recruitment, but i dont necessarily see that as a bad thing, if managed well that natural tension even conflict can provide quality assurance and maybe that's what we have seen this window here.

I think our problem with the role have been many, poor governance, managers or owners having to much authority and the role becoming a bit of Patsey role with no real autonomy or clarity in terms of remit or else that flips and flops. Clearly our chop change approach to managers, limits and being in general a basket case hasn't helped the role.

In truth we've never really applied it properly or if we have, we reneged on it and rebooted it when we appointed a new manager. In Thelwell case i think he's just an admin middle manager now.

If we are to recover as a football, we need to be clear on the role, the remit and what we want from the role.
TFG should be very clear in what they require from a DoF. If they don't know then the club is the loser and more money will be wasted.

At best it might be said they are starting to learn from their mistakes at Roma in that regard but summer planning should already be underway. There is no time to waste.

I don't think they have the luxury of allowing Thelwell the rest of the season if he is leaving. Otherwise they need to allow him get on with things now.

There will probably have to be a hybrid model but at least Moyes has a track record of prudent judgement with transfers.

We need a lot of ducks in a row to hit the ground running - but I doubt that they are. A new CEO has to come in as well and that adds to the power dynamics that have to be resolved.
