Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

Was just thinking about the game at the weekend.

Half the back four (Tarkowski and O'Brien) the entire midfield (Ndiaye, Gueye, Garner, Lindstrom) and the striker (Beto) all brought in by Thelwell.

That's 7/11 starters - total cost about 85m (giving Lindstrom the cost of purchasing him as well otherwise just 65m)

Btw the cost of the other 4 totals up to about 65m as well weirdly (Pickford, Mykolenko, Branthwaite and Doucoure)

Looking at that I'm inclined to say you're right and we should give him a new contract with the instructions ok now you can shop in a higher market but we want half the desks to be of this calibre too price/quality wise.
Yeah I do think now the Dyche tax has been disapplied we'll start to get a fairer appraisal of the players he has brought in the last couple of years. There seems to be a weird situation at the moment where his individual players are getting quite a lot of praise while people still yell for the man who brought them in to be let go.

Would be interested to know Moyes' opinion on things, there are murmurs of them disagreeing on the January approach but they seem to me to be two personalities who could agree on a lot of things, like the need to be responsible with a budget, and the importance of character as well as ability. The more he sees of Thelwell's signings the more Moyes may start to feel he can trust his eye too.

Spot on.

That's only true if certain key players stay fit. It's a gamble in my opinion, particularly in the forward areas (full back and the wing aren't exactly bursting with options either).
I know, I would have liked more if they were players who could improve the squad and not for the sake of it. It was more of a dig about the previous misuse of players we already had.

There’s an element of risk I guess. But when you’re arguably at very most 3 wins from a secure point total by the end of January and have a team in fine form it’s a very minute risk really.

If what we wanted wasn’t out there there’s massive downside to clogging up the squad with 2 or 3 filler players just to cover every possible eventuality. The absolute worst case emergency situation is having to put in Sherif or Benjamin or even Graham or Clarke for some minutes, which wouldn’t be a disaster. Better than clogging up their pathway with, say, Danny Ings on an 18 month deal just in case all four of our strikers end up injured at once.

I think there is 0 risk if im being honest, actually to use the current opta stat 0.64% chance of us going down.

At this stage last season Luton had 20 points and we had 22.

Would need Ipswich and Leicester to seriously out perform their current mean and for us to significantly underperform below the mean we had under Dyche.

Looking at the context and the fixtures i just dont see it.

Not just that, they’d need to outperform their current PPG (albeit marginally) to get past our current total. Although we should probably try to not lose 15 games in a row just in case.

I am not 100% sure where this threadbare view is coming from? Thinking about who can play where (or did in the last 12 months)...not all the below are ideal for every position but we seem reasonably well covered at least by next month with the forwards coming back. Injuries can hit any time for any team of course

1- GK (3)
Pickford
Virginia
Begovic

1-RB(6)
O'Brien
Patterson
Coleman
Young
Garner
Dixon

1- LB(3)
Mykolenko
Young
McNeil

2 - CB's(4)
O'Brien
Tarkowski
Branthwaite
Keane

2 - CM(5)
Gana
Garner
Doucoure
Iroegbunam
Alcaraz

1 - RM/RW (3)
Lindstrom
Harrison
McNeil

1 - LM/LW (3)
N'Diaye
McNeil
Harrison

1 - AM (4)
Doucoure
Lindstrom
Alcaraz
N'Diaye

1 - CF (2)
Beto
N'Diaye

The CF spot looks worst but we should have Chermiti, Broja and DCL back for the run in.
I have also allowed for no one from the U21's breaking through like Armstrong did last year. We regularly seem to have 2-3 on the bench each game

All in all I dont think this was a huge gamble.

I mean it looks better when you write players down more than once yeah. (in your list we have 6 players for 4 attacking positions - one being Harrison who is having a shocking season).

We are clearly threadbare in attacking areas, in numbers and quality. Let’s hope we are ok until McNeil/Broja/Chermiti get back.
