Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

….the Joe Royle era also saw Tommy Wright, John Hurst, Brian Labone, Derek Temple, Alan Whittle, Jimmy Husband, Colin Harvey et al come through the Academy. It was a time when players were told whether they were coming or going, much different to a Rooney or Anthony Gordon coming through. Osman and Hibbert might be the last of our one-club players.
These 2 a perfect example of being a 'young homegrown' player meaning relatively nothing in terms of someone wanting to stay at your club. Both refused to play, wanted out, made kissy faces to anyone they could.

Someone like Richarlison, born on the other side of the world, with no genuine reason to like us apart from we were paying him good money, literally put his body on the line for the club, could of messed up any potential move for him (could argue it has with the injuries he's suffered since)

I think there is one very simple answer when you compare the home grown talent of the seventies with the more decent academy graduates.... agents.

…a sign of the times, just as we will take homegrown players from other clubs. Power is with footballers these days, even those at the top clubs tend to look for lucrative moves at some point.

Wharton would cost anywhere from 50-70m mate, palace don't sell cheap, they also know just how good Wharton is.

As a club we have to buy the likes of Wharton or Rigg before they get that first move upwards into the premier league, once they get it and show they can easily adapt to that level then all value has gone and they're only value for money for the really top clubs.

Anything under £100mil to have a midfield group of; Wharton, Harrison, Garner, Rigg, Iroegbunam...is well worthwhile. Thats a long term midfield group who can only improve.

The only problem is...we also need to spend £100mil on defence and £100mil on attacking players.

This is going to be a big two windows coming up and hopefully TFG throw big money in for u23 players.

£100million, to not actually improve our midfield we currently have

Plus i'm presuming you atually mean Armstrong & not Harrison, or are you looking to start a 'Trent' esq first name thing.

That Jobe Bellingham is quite good too

….watched him last season and he was poor on that occasion but he’s very young and looks to have improved this season. It’s amazing how similar he is to his brother in terms of physicality and movement, obviously a gulf in quality but certainly one to watch.

That's grand mate, ive no prob with lads getting mins and an opportunity and if they earn a starting shirt more the better - the point was more on profile and market as opposed to integration. I suppose my thinking is instead of targeting 39 year old full backs or the Donny Van Der Beeks of this world - broaden the base with this type of profile if resources are at play and i mean if.

Jan i think offers an opportunity as i think most clubs have budgeted and dont really like to have to do business in that window unless they have to - you can steal a march - like Palace did with Wharton.

Not so sure we dont have selling points for lads of that profile, we can point to likes of Tim, Garner - who we have brought in and through to be PL players. Branthwaite and Gordon are England internationals - we have developed a good track record in recent years - in and around this profile and giving lads an opportunity.
Wharton looked very good v Everton were he was given all the time and space he needed against a two man midfield, the next week v Liverpool he couldn’t get into the game at any stage, looked less than average and was substituted with about twenty minutes to go.

Sorry what? Quite literally both Wharton and even young Rigg improve our midfield.

Im not sure what youre trying to say here?

Yeah Armstrong... :)

Lets be honest wharton is out of the question just not worth the price for us to be even looking at him. Same with righ does look like he has the talent but with most of the cm leaving feel the club will be looking st more experience. I would be after gomes in jan on a free to try get him here then still feel we need another profile to onana to give us some height and power in the midfield

Angel Gomes would be a fantastic signing , exactly the type of midfielder that we would need if we want to change our style...... however unfortunately he will have far better options than us.
