Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

Think he got one cap. He genuinely had top level technical ability (I think even Joe Cole said he was different class). If he had pace, or more strength or a clean shot he would have been a top class player.

Just checked. Got two caps in 12/13 period when Hodgson was handing them out like confetti e.g. Shawcross, Cleverley, Caulker, Jay Bothroyd period.

Was getting passed his best then, should've got chances between 2007-10 when he was unfussy but a consistent part of regular top 6-7 squad.

Also didn't break fully through until the 2004-05 season when he was 24 which is a rarity at the top level so that probably worked against him.

Id add as well as to Mangala/Garner being liked, that Moyes gets a bit pigeonholed to me as like a Dyche. It's not an attack on either, but I think they are quite different.

For a lot of Moyes tenure I'm not sure we even had a conventional target man. And he liked midfielders across the midfield line who were comfortable in possession but also disciplined without the ball.

I don't remember him, Kilbane aside ever really wanting a wide man to run down the touchline and put crosses in.

Re the goal scoring Mid I do agree, but those players are hard to find, but honestly wouldn't be surprised if we saw NDiaye/Lindstrom/Harrison all playing and drifting in the 10 spaces like Arteta/Osman/Peinaar used to.
Moyes doesn't like crosses, eh?

If you can give me one example of a relegation threatened club buying teenagers to stay up I’ll bow to your ‘wisdom’. You’re acting like we’re comfortably mid table and trying to build.

We need 21-25/26 year olds, still to hit their prime but perfectly capable now.
Same way alot of posters wanted a young swanky foreign manager with potential to bring the club forward despite being a point outside the relegation zone with a crap squad

Just seen Rico Henry is playing again for Brentford this weekend after a long time out.

He should've made the England squad a few years back imo as was playing at the level Robinson has reached at Fulham but Sir Southgate was not interested.

If he can string games together then I think Brentford might be open to selling him as they've coped without him for last 18 months and very clever with how they sell and buy.

He's far better than Myko going forward obviously and can play in different formations. Also been playing in prem since 2021 so pretty experienced at this level now. I think he's the type who'd appeal to Moyes as a steady eddie type and then can also sign a younger LB to develop in the background.
Didn’t he say his was mum racially abused at a game against us. Probably strike that one off the list if so

Plus we shouldn’t be signing anyone that has injury issues

Always good to go in for players that have already got a good relationship with the fans

He’s not really been in the team for them this season but for the last 2 seasons he seemed to score at a fairly decent lick. 6 goals in 27 last season and 6 goals in 19 the year before.

On a side note, I hate the idea of us having a ‘poacher’ striker - we need movement and pace. That’s the direct the league is going. We’ve been hamstrung by having such a niche/one dimensional striker for years and having to build a team around one guy.

Good insight on the league and the top teams.

However, what if....there was a filthy team?

A team that was dirty, high press, playing the refs and using gamesmanship in every decision.

Not to say Mourinho specifically but his Porto team (underdog) that had quality but were different in style to everyone else in Portugal?

Like DIRTY LEEDS back in the days of Revie?

What if? Everton hired an Italian old school manager...lets say the 'new' Marcelo Lippi.

Defence first but had a poacher like an Inzaghi or a Franny Jeffers...

The key point im trying and probably failing to make is that to get to the top of the league you need a DIFFERENT style to the rest. Look at Forest...compare to RS, City and Arsenal.

What I believe Everton need is something different...then those sides will say "well the league is going the way of Everton".

Exactly! We’ve built the team around one type of striker because his skill set was so specific - it meant every other striker had to be a similar profile to make it work. And when we deviated to a completely different type of striker, it was a disaster.

I’d sell Dom this window if we could work out a deal, 100%. They probably won’t because of Chermiti’s phantom injury.

Pace and movement is what gets you goals now, plus a manager who lets you attack.

True but IF DCL could finish...if he put in 100% effort then...

If we had a world class poacher, a world class target man, world class...etc etc etc

Its all about quality.

We cant afford that. Thats why we need to sign them u21.
