Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

But, his success rate post Everton does matter. It's not great. Probably the only deals he managed that were similar to what he did at Everton were Souceck, Bowen and Coufal. Another few good players were brought in, obviously. But loads of dross

His dithering and procrastinating used to drive most Hammers mad.
We're in the toilet, I'm not going to complain if we sign players 13 days from now rather than 6.

I'd rather we took it the wire and came away with a better squad.

But you will be complaining if we leave it late and then come away with the likes of Danny Ings et al. That's the kind of thing Moyes was doing. The desperation and bad decision-making still kicks in, just with a desperate scramble for useless PL proven players.

I don’t think you know me or what I’ll be thinking.

You and I have zero skills in negotiating transfers, and zero knowledge of what’s going on right now.

You can wring your hands over events about which we know nothing, but I would suggest you calm yourself and watch what happens.

There’s nothing else you can do.

Okay, just assumed you'd be a normal fan and unhappy if we left it late and got no one in or signed poor, past it players. But, hey-ho.

Input, yes. Not control. And not at the expense of getting some additions in.

We need to do this DoF thing right and let them have the ultimate say, not the manager. Bringing in players that need coaching is problematic when we have Dyche as manager. Thelwell didn't choose Dyche and it was part of his remit to try and bring in some players with potential, when trying to stave off administration and PSR deductions. I think he did that okay tbf. but could have done much better.

I would judge him more harshly if it wasn't for the fact that Dyche doesn't give chances to players, doesn't coach them and plays most out of position.

We know from Bobble that Moyes wants PL proven players. That means crap mostly, in terms of what we can afford. He signed loads of players like that for West Ham. Keane is a PL proven player, Harrison is etc.

If we can find a better DoF than Thelwell, then great, they must be out there. But I want our recruitment team to find us some talent and Moyes to coach them tbh. If he dithers or buys PL proven rubbish, it could be extremely problematic.
Moyes did say that he wouldn't just buy anyone, they must be an improvement on what he currently has. That in itself isn't hard or problematic.

Says that a lot. Then does things like pays a £7m loan fee for Kalvin Phillips for half a season. My contention is that people talk like Moyes is a transfer genius. He ain't.

However, I believe we have improved the quality of our manager, so if he dithers or mucks up our transfers, we'll have to rely on that.

You’re inventing scenarios and telling me how I’d react to them.
Your contention was that you'd rather leave it late and come away with a better squad. We would all say that, there is nothing profound in it. That is not a given. There is a good chance we miss out on transfers, sign poor PL proven players etc.

We are in an extremely precarious position and Moyes has to be careful that his dithering doesn't make it harder. It does not automatically follow that by waiting, we get it right. As things get more desperate/deadlines tighter, it is more likely the opposite happens.

You’re using the word ‘dithering,’ which tells me all I need to know about your appreciation of patience and care.

I am not of your mind, and that’s fine. We disagree. Move on.

I was hoping we'd moved on from those owners to people with a bit more about them.

Yeah me too but if you look at their time at Roma apart from this season and the first. Theyve practically spent nothing and sold alot.

Personally these arent the owners to be spending money. They are investors and want a return on what they've put into the club

Why let it go to the wire, if you have a target you can afford get them in early or go with U21'S rather than a six month Ginola, Gazza
at the journeyman end of their career.

Even with the PSR restrictions, some of the transfer / loan decision making has been woefully poor, e.g. Broja.
I don’t know why it always goes to the wire but like I said, it was an indictment of the way the club was and has been run. Control over the timing of deals has possibly been taken away from the Club.

Moving early is possible when you have a bit of head room to do deals, we have not had that since Moshiris initial splurge. We shop late and we shop in the bargain basement bin. I presume u21 players would play if and when they’re good enough to do so. Even with how awful we’ve been how many u21’s have made it to being first team regulars?

I don’t think anyone ever thought bringing Ginola or Gascoigne in, even on short term deal, was a good look even if it was 20+ years ago, we continue the trend with Young and extending contracts for older players and bringing in Carlo Nash and Asmir Begovic.

Broja hasn’t been the worst loan by any stretch. The injury was terrible luck but when you’re leveraged and stretched as much as Everton were any blip on the radar is a potential catastrophe.

Things can only get better from here?…. Right?
